The route is highly possible, but you will be limited in your choices of where you are willing to teach and what you will be teaching. As with any job the main determining factor will be based largely on who you know. If you played basketball in high school and your old coach is a principal now and needs someone then they will likely hire you, if you are par for the course. Lastly I mentioned willing to teach, as in if you teach HS you might teach 3,4, or 5 preps which will run you right out of the profession if your not strong willed.

Default Post Baccalaureate program

Have you considered the post baccalaureate program at UTSA? It is close to a traditional program in the respect that your internship is actually a semester of student teaching that one would ordinarily have with the traditional program.

If you are going to do the UTSA post bacc program, I would go ahead and go for a Master of Ed. The difference is about 1-2 classes.

Don't waste your time and money. I was lucky, I am a Vet so it was paid for. I have now been teaching as an JROTC instructor for close to 6 years with experience in the classroom and have tried to get into a regular teaching job as a history or social study teacher with no luck. Northside ISD or Judson ISD will not consider you if you are not tested and passed TExES examinations in English, Math, Bi-lingual, or Science. Other schools will consider you if you fit their needs. Like already mentioned, I suspect many just want to hire traditional applicants that have degrees from teaching colleges. I gave up trying to become a teacher even thought I have a BS in occupational education, and a MS in human resources with a certification as a corporate trainer and not to mention a retired vet with trainer experience. Go get a degree in a skill field or look to work somewhere else. The economy is depressed, too many applicants are out there looking to be teachers and districts not considering anyone with an alternative certification credentials is too much to overcome.
