The Strip on St Marys was, back in the day, THE place for live music and a party atmosphere. As the burbs developed and clubs moved outward, the street has quieted considerably, but left great living spaces. Lots of good stock in (and around) Monte Vista. Just make sure that if moving into a duplex or quad-plex that you find out how quickly the owner is willing to fix issues that crop up in old houses.

I still remember the morning I was at my sink brushing my teeth (in a house on Woodlawn Ave) and the damned think fell off the wall. Pipes broke. Water everywhere. A mess, but funny thinking about it now, as I just stood there with the toothbrush still in my mouth. It was ridiculous... And took days to fix, as the super was painfully slow.

Also look into Southtown/King William, Lavaca, SoFlo (South of Flores St) and Downtown proper. Lots of places to live and if you're into living around creative, open-minded and local-centric folks, it's THE spot in San Antonio.

Excellent! Thanks so much for the recommendations. I'm able to spend a fair amount on housing (ideally around $850/mo or less), but it seems as if Southtown/King William might be a bit out of my league, unfortunately. I'd looked into Cevallos Lofts, which look AWESOME, but the cheapest they have is $1,039/mo. for a ~650 sq. ft. unit. Yikes. Anyway, I'm definitely hoping to find those creative class/indie-types of people, so I'm glad to hear some more neighborhood recommendations!
