Yes, referring to San Antonio as "#1 for irresponsible drunks" is a smear campaign. Statistics show that the city is improving/dropping on the list of the most DWIs and the number of arrests are down last year, yet some still claim that we are the worst place in the nation for this, which is factually not true.

It seems like y'all are arguing two different aspects, try and separate the two.
The first article uses survey data gathered from the 200 largest cities on how much alcohol people consume per month. This doesn't relate to how many people drink and drive. There are a lot of people that like to hammer back their beverage of choice at home. According to this "survey", people in San Antonio like to drink their alcohol, and maybe the lower ranking on the DUI arrest means that more people are making the right decision and not driving after they drink.

Boston Named

Don't feel bad San Antonio. My former state had the top two in the nation with Boston as the drunkest and Springfield, MA ranking #2. Milwaukee was actually number 3. It must be something about those cold climates. San Antonio was #5. This was the report released four days ago.

The list posted by the OP does address a separate issue from the drunk driving in this town. I used to always see drunk drivers at night on weekends, but I don't see them as much ever since "No Refusal Weekends" were started. I saw a wrong way driver and a lot of the swerving drivers. Most of the DUI stops happen on IH-10 north of downtown which was named the worst area in a newspaper article I read a couple of years ago.

Statistics have shown that Texas is one of the worst states for alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities and Bexar County was #1 in Texas in 2008.

An average of ~14 drinks per month seems high to me, but just about everything seems high to me since most months for me are under 5 drinks total.

Another thing is that alcoholic drinks are often high calorie as well - which contributes to another problem this city has. People need to get back in touch with WATER. Or at least tea or diet soda.

Nowadays swerving drivers does not have to be drunk. They are sober and texting...

I am originally from Boerne. People are just becoming irresponsible about drinking period these days. There could be a mixture of things fueling this fire so don't let some stat deter your perception. I had to avoid a very nice white Porsche the other night that was a possible DUI and the car right in front of them veered into my lane also after passing the porsche. Funny, two drunks following each other. This happen around 2:15am between Stone Oak and Bitters on 1604. After I got passed them, I told myself it's time to get home. FYI, I hold a commercial DL so I can't really afford to drink and get a DUI, but avoiding these pukes from hitting you can make your butt pucker at times.

Much like TRN's post stated, a lot of people like to whine about it; but very few actually do anything to combat the problem!

And yes, I have called in suspected drunk drivers before. I have no problems in doing so and giving the police my full info in case I can be used as a witness in the person's prosecution (although it has yet to come to that).

I also know a few people that go as far as to follow suspected drunks until such time as the police can intervene.

Be a part of the solution, or you're just part of the problem...
GUILTY HERE! I used to do some work with DPS and I have called in possible DUI drivers and followed them till the police or troopers could catch up. The only thing about San Antonio is, they have call agents taking calls so a lot of times they can't keep you on the phone. On the other hand, counties and small town city PD's dispatch an officer right away. Least in my experience.
