Default SAT preparation schools

A friend of mine is looking for a SAT preparation school/tutor for her 11th grader. They live in Northeast ISD, her son goes to Northside ISD Health Career High School. Can someone here give them some suggestion?

My own children just got in middle school so I wouldn't know where to go.

I heard a presentation by Kaplan a few weeks ago when I picked up my son's scores from his school. They have a test prep center here in town somewhere near 410 on the north side. I got the distinct impression that they knew what they were doing.

Have they tried any of the SAT prep manuals just to take a practice test? That could help them determine if they truly even need a school/tutor or not. The library usually has a variety of the manuals to check out.

Other than Kaplan, I do know that Sylvan does SAT prep as well. I don't know anything about either of them other than knowing they both offer it...

Look up Princeton review they are pricy but they will definitely improve scores at least 10%. IMHO SATs and ACTs are over rated. If you can get your kids to get accepted to Health Careers that should be good enough. Not a lot of people know this, but Health Careers is sorta like a free private school! Great teachers and staff, well rounded students, and of course the smaller classes are defintely a plus...

Default better suggestion

SAT's are very important! Many schools will not look at the rest of the application if scores aren't in their preferred range. Look into getsatprep(dot)com and save yourself driving back and forth according to a prep center's schedule.

Health Careers IS a great school...I'm a graduate...but the standards aren't as high as they used to be. It used to be more like an actual college admissions process where "the best of the best" were admitted. Now they just have minimum standards -(C average in MS) and satisfactory attendance & disciplinary records. If you meet the minimum, you go into a lottery. A certain percentage of the slots always go to NISD students. I just wanted to clear up the admission policies. I think that you still get one of the best educations in the city, regardless of whether or not you decide to pursues something medical.

I took a PSAT prep class my 9th grade year...I think it was through Princeton Review. It was a good class and because of it I didn't have to take the SAT prep class and I got a 1300 (back when it was just the 2 sections).

One of the best things about the classes is that they teach the test (which has a negative connotation, I know) and you learn the instructions/methods backwards and forward so that you don't have to take time to read that during the test. They also teach methods to help you figure out the math questions easier.

Anyway...I recommend Princeton Review, but I know Kaplan has a great prep program as well.
