I definitely agree with jeffutsa. I lived in LA for a year and every single time you'd walk into an in n out you'd see their smiling faces delivering great customer service. That's something whataburger lacks although I like their burgers more than in n outs. I've actually wittten a review for whataburger
Stating they need to up their customer service more.

It really is a hit or miss with customer service at whataburger. In n outs I think would do well in Texas. Now about del taco, idk why they're expanding. Food is terrible and half the quality of taco bell which doesn't say much.

I spent about 3 weeks in Northern California and my hotel was directly across the street from an In N Out, so I ate there just about every other day and never got tired of it. And I love both Whataburger and In N out...but these were my observations at In n Out

- Very friendly and very clean cut & well spoken staff....not the typical "minimum-wage-I-don't-care-attitude".
- The dinning area is immaculate at all times no matter how busy it is. Someone's full time - sole job is to keep the tables and floor clean at all times.
- It seem there was line of at least 10 cars in their drive thru, and it didnt matter what time it was. It was always busy there. But the inside and outside lines always moved fast.

- Yes their burgers are smaller than Whataburger. I sorta think Whataburgers are too big. As far as taste, they are both great in different ways.

- I think their fries and shakes are far better than Whataburger.

I am looking forward to them setting up shop here in SA.

The staff. That really is the big difference. Whataburger attracts the mouth-breathers while In-N-Out can be choosy (they pay more) so they get college students that smile and speak properly. I have never had bad service at In-N-Out. As for the burgers, hey they're both fast food. There isn't a huge difference between the two, other than the low-carb/animal-style/etc. options and the much larger Whataburger menu.

It's funny, I travel all around this country and never have I seen anyplace that didn't have fast food burger joints, Mexican, etc. I honestly have never encountered a shortage of any genre of greasy, fatty foods for the masses.

I avoid the places for the most part (with the exception of Subway), if I have to eat at a restaurant I try to find some local fare or at least something that is unique. Jonesing for a In-N-Out or one of the many other West Coast chains makes me laugh as I've sampled their offerings and don't see what causes the infatuation with them! After hearing people rave about them, I always give them a try so I can see what all the excitement is about. So far I have yet to discover what is so special about any of them.

That said, I did miss Rudy's when we left Texas for Belgium for three years. I wasn't infatuate about it, I just would have liked to occasionally have some of their BBQ. But that isn't greasy fast food...

Cheers! M2

I used to love eating in n out in Cali, and both the wife and me agree that their burgers taste better than the whataburger that we have tried here. But that's just our opinion. I never saw an empty in n out.

I'm not a huge In & Out fan either but they are ten times better than Whataburger. I'll do Wendy's, Carl's Jr., McDonald's or BK before getting WhataBarf.

I miss the Texas double cheeseburger (Wendy's)-that was a huge no no for them to take that away!

If I have to eat a fast food burger, Wendy's is about it. Occasionally I will try a Big Mac but usually it makes me nauseous for quite some time afterward. Burger King's Whopper is just too damn small as compared to the ones I used to eat when I was a teenager back in the late 70s/early 80s. I've had Whataburger, In-N-Out and a bunch of others and was equally unimpressed. There's nothing special about any of them, and I can't fathom how anyone would think they are anything worth craving.

I would occasionally get nostalgic for those Krystal sliders and grab a big box of 'em, back when I was a teenager in Florida we used to order a bunch of them and cruise around eating them. They too would make me nauseous but that brought back fond memories. I was sad to see 'em close down as they were great for cruising around in the open Jeep and snacking on them.

Much like beer, life's too short for bad food...

The "American" Mexican chains don't do very well here in San Antonio, there are simply too many authentic choices. I like Bueno, but as I posted in another thread, I think the 151 location is now closed, which doesn't surprise me since it was always to dead.

As for fast food burger...I have never been a fan of Whataeva burger...not Bill Miller or even Taco Cabano. Maybe I don't like the local fast food chains!

I do like me some In-N-Out though...mmmm, good. And Del Taco? I haven't seen one of those in YEARS!

On the subject of restaurants not hanging around, I wonder how many places get tired of paying the crazy property taxes? I know Texas is "good" for business, but the old Krystal location on Culebra had taxes of $ 27,000 back in 2010! That's CRAZY!!!

Smile In & Out Burger Updates??

The Dallas area is seeing all the In&Out Burger locations as of right now. I understand that a meat plant will be built in the Ft. Worth area. Once this is done In&Out can build locations within a 600 mile radius. Does anyone have any idea if this plant is being contructed yet? And when can our SA area get a location?? So home sick for this!
