aAre there any 'sewing clubs', or 'get togethers', church affiliated or not in the north/northwest part of town?

You might check into churches, and the Threads of Love program. They sew keepsake blankets for preemies to give to the hospitals. They also have even sewn baptism and (sadly) burial gowns for those babies born so small, they could not wear ready made items. IIRC, Oaks Hills sort of coordinates the program city wide.

Also check with your better sewing fabric stores, they would have more insight.

Threads of Love provides a valuable service for newborns in NICU.

Well it is not church based but have you heard about the SCA? It is a historical reenactment society, medievalists, and sewing outfits is a component of that. Unsure how the local scene is but perhaps you might find like-minded individuals.

Anyways you have a wonderful aspiration so good luck. If I had more time I'd love to learn how to alter clothes since I see the need for so many minor improvements that could be made to plenty pieces of mine.
