My family is getting ready to move to SA and are looking for a single family home to rent in a safe neighborhood near Lackland AFB. Any thoughts on neighborhoods/schools? Thanks for your comments!

Do yourself a favor, skip the area immediately around the base and focus more on those outlined in this map...

The shaded area is easily within 15-25 minutes of base.

Cheers! M2

Have to agree...the immediate area around Lackland is not one you would want to live in, nor is it the school district that you would want to put your kids into.

Now if you are WILLING to live on base, I understand that you can move in IMMEDIATELY and their elementry school is 5 star rating....but if you need Jr High, High School or want more freedoms than base housing allows, the area suggested above is the way to go.

We both work on Lackland and would NEVER consider living in the immediate area. No kids at home, and still would not consider it an option.

Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you want some help.

I should add that while my map shows the area I would recommend looking in, there are nice areas to live that are south, southwest and/or west if you're looking to be in a more "rural" environment.

There are other areas worth considering as well, but the majority of people that I know who work on Lackland live in the highlighted area (myself included).

Cheers! M2

I agree with Paka and Major.... East down Military Drive near Brooks ain't to shabby either. Especially in Brooks itself. Many new apartments going up its still a serene hood at this time. Really close proximity to most of your needs. Road House, Cracker Barrel, Chili's , Panda Ex., Home Depot , Lowe's, Wal-Mart, new theater . Mission Trails Hospital all less than a 1/4 mile away. If you use 410 instead of Military drive for travel during rush hours it's a quick commute. As for Schools they have one of those schools for advanced ed back in there.

The school district is the same regardless of whether you're right near Lackland or in the shaded area (aside from a bit on the eastside of that map which is NEISD). It's all northside. Just fyi. And NISD is a good district.

I hadn't considered schools. The technical or whatever school in Brooks is only one in Brooks I know of. Doubt a good school exists in the area outside Brooks and nearby. So never mind. Considering current and possible future gas prices it would be a long walk.

I was speaking only to the shaded areas.

Westover Hills, Alamo Ranch, Braun Station, or Helotes...I would go from there.
