I'd like to install a water softener and I'd like to get an idea of the cost. I plan to buy a $500ish unit and the house is not pre-plumbed for it. I know costs will vary based on the house, but am I looking at $500, $1000, or more for the installation?

I bought my water softener at Lowe's. They have plumbers with contracted rates. When they have sales, the cheapest price is $99 for installation if you're pre-plumbed. The most expensive is $8xx if you're not pre-plumbed (regular price).

I bought it at Lowe's too. I was pre-plumbed, so the permits actually cost more than the install. Figure around $400 if you're pre-plumbed for the install labor/parts/permits.

Pre-plumbed installation? It's like connecting 2 garden hoses and programming your VCR...yes, I said VCR

I digress, lowes has a "flat fee" if you are not pre-plumbed, I thought it was $1k but I could be wrong. Anyway they came out to my house and said no way wanted more like $2k but that was because I had a lot of concrete to deal with. I had a plumber do the plumbing for $800 and I installed it myself.

Oh, I didn't get one of the cheap box store ones either, I did a lot of research and bought this one:
Fleck 5600SXT Metered 48,000 Grain Water Softener

If it's already pre-plumbed, what exactly would you need a permit for? That sounds ridiculous.
