I have the same AC Centex put in when we first had the house built. That was a little over 6 years ago. To be honest, i'm waiting for this thing to die on me so I can get a "better" one. But it just won't die on me
*Knocks on wood...really, who wants to spend thousands on a new AC unit*
I also used Centex Mortgage, who then sold the loan to Chase shortly after. And when the rates dropped, refinanced with Wells Fargo. No complaints here.

An A/C unit in South Texas should last between 12-15 years even with heavy use. It may not be the most efficient - but it should last. Six years is just half way. I would say the issue must be with Centex supplier if there is one because as we all know Centex doesn't manufacture A/C units. What is the brand of the A/C unit?

My parents built a custom house and their builder used Coleman. They had problems with both units. Absolute junk. They now have new Trane units that operate perfectly.
When I was selecting a builder - the brand of A/C is important. There are several good brands and several bad brands. I made sure the my builder used one of the better brands before signing with them since this will impact my pocket book for years to come. Sorry to hear about being stuck with the Coleman. Funny...and Centex is highly rated.

we are having a centex home built and the brand of unit they install now is Goodman --- seems like it may still be a crappy brand --- however, after reading many reviews on A/C brands there are good and bad with all of them --- Goodman, Trane, Rheem, Carrier, etc...so centex using goodman brand was not enough to deter us from building with them...i did stop and talk to several people in the neighborhood that had some of the first homes built there and none of them have had any problems with their units...
i used a website that compares over 45000 furnaces, central a/c units and boilers and they all had consumers that were satisfied and dissatisfied with all the major a/c brands...hopefully luck with be on our side and we won't have any problems with it, but only time will tell...

Goodman is the manufacturer of my a/c unit and it is pure junk. We've had the inside coil replaced four times, the outside once, and also had the fan replaced. It got so bad that Airtron offered me over $1000 off a new unit so they could buy out my extended warranty. The new unit was going to be close to $15K, so I stuck with my extended warranty and I'm sure they'll be out again this year. After this year I'm screwed though, because the extended warranty is up.
