Default Help with moving to San Antonio or New Braunfels

We are thinking of moving to San Antonio from Cali. I like being near the attractions, nightlife, and including a good library within a large city by about a 15 or 20 minute drive. Perhaps an affordable condo under $120,000 in a safe area is something I had in mind.

My friend suggested New Braunfels and I disapprove of that idea because of the driving. Furthermore, New Braunfels is a small city of nearly 54,000 people. I'm worried it will be a culture shock, boring, and too slow considering I do not enjoy too much river activities.

If you can help out please do. And inform me on the type of attractions and activities that are in San Antonio.

We live in the STone Oak area 78258/78260. Schools are the best! Everything is just a few miles away. Before moving to this area people tried to talk us out of it because of the "traffic" but being from California myself -- it's a day in the park here.

People here are super friendly!!

As for attractions - Downtown is only 20 miles away, always something going on. SeaWorld or Fiesta Texas is very close too. Wonderful restaurants... Stone Oak has a brand new library too. Lot's of parks too. Needless to say -- We LOVE San Antonio!!

Good Luck! I don't think you'll regret the move!

Is Stone Oak area in the city of San Antonio? Are there access roads or (smaller roads) to get downtown that I could take instead of main tolls and highways. I try to avoid highways and tolls.

What is your opinion and experiences with New Braunfels? When I looked it up online it looked too backwoods and small-village feel (which would be an utter nightmare if true).

From where in Cali are you moving? It will make a differance in what you have and what to expect. I live near downtown(3 miles north of the Alamo). I would reccomend renting a place for a while until you really know the city. There are many rentals in areas near downtown. Southtown, Government Hill, Dignowity, Tobin Hills and my favorite, Mahncke Park.
There is all kinds of nightlife, day time fun places, great stores and entertainment close in to downtown. There are also apartments in the downtown district.
All is accesable by bicycle, even the huge downtown library. SA is a better choice, I don;t think you want the suburbs.

Stone Oak is considered part of San Antonio. It's very nice and THE place to build/buy right now. New Braunfels is nice, but it's quite a drive to San Antonio. The traffic reallllly stinks on I-35. I'm not a resident of New Braunfels, so I can't really give an opinion. I'm a huge fan of Wurstfest (their HUGE sausage festival) and river tubing!

Aside from The River Walk what are the names of cool venues, museums, annual events, etc., in San Antonio? I'm expecting there will be a lot of Latino culture (which is a plus).

I'm moving from San Jose, California.

Furrypro: your budget is really limited if you want to buy a condo near downtown. You may want to start by renting. The suburbs are better priced and you may find a condo or townhouse in your price range, but won't be as close to the "fun" as living closer to downtown.
Alamos Heights has a good balance between urban and suburban, but very limited options in your price range.

What are some good suburb areas. And how far away is the drive?

There are lots of condos in the medical center area, some may be in your price range. There are also some townhomes near 281 and Bitters that would be in your price range, the cheaper ones usually haven't been updated since the 70's so you would have some work to do on them unless you like retro styles. For example: 13018 Heimer Rd Unit 102 San Antonio TX - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - MLS #918365 - Realtor.com® (I hope we can post links to that website here!) That's a good area and a short drive to downtown, good schools there too, library a couple blocks down the road and only 15 minute drive to the main library downtown. Or here's one in Alamo Heights, even cheaper: 102 Ruelle Ln Unit 201d San Antonio TX - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - MLS #928080 - Realtor.com® Those kitchen cabinets look like they're from the 50's.

As long as you have a car, there's not a lot of advantage to living downtown. You can always drive there when you want to party and the rest of the time it's nice to live a little further out.
