On the drive to work this morning, I noticed demolition crews have begun to gut the old Northwest Plaza buildings on Fredericksburg Rd. Does anyone know if the flea market relocated elsewhere or did the vendors go their separate ways?

Wow....spent a lot of time in my childhood in that little strip mall. Don't know whats going on with the tenants though..sorry.

I remember back when we were 10-12 years old, my brother and i were walking down the sidewalk there, and he looks down and found a 20 dollar bill! Big bucks back then.....

They are tearing down the shopping center to make a reservoir that will decrease the chance of flooding in that area of town.

The stores closed, and some relocated last year. They have definitely taken their time starting the demolition.

I think most of the vendors went their own way, very sad to see the old building go.

It is very sad to see that old complex disappear, I know it was very busy back in the day. But I'm sure it is for the better. I know one of the managers who worked at the thrift store. She said that section of the building had faulty wiring and was a fire trap waiting to happen.

That place had the best flea market ever. I miss it.

It was a real flea market too. None of that cheap china stuff.

Right? There've been lots of clearing out of storefronts going on the past couple months but no actual demolition of the building as a whole. I can't wait 'til it's done - it'll be nice to see green space there, even if it is in the form of a resevoir tank!

I don't know where the flea market vendors went. My husband and his dad LOVED that place.

I always loved that old plaza. Does anyone know what originally occupied that entire back area where the flea market was? I wondered if it might have been a school of some type. There were indoor hallways, particularly in that back central part where the cafe was and the indoor shops which were located inside their own rooms separated by real walls.

The front part facing Fredericksburg was an average strip center. But the back area was very unique. You used to could walk into the inner courtyard before they blocked it off with fencing in recent years.

I remember one of the vendors near the old record store telling me back in the late 80's that the building was not very safe. But it stuck around more than 20 years after that. My question for someone who may know what were the original stores there when it opened and what year did it open?
