Just because it's "inside the loop: doesn't make it bad.
I hate people that judge like that.

All three areas are very distinct and generally different areas o the city. Balcones Heights in like 10/410 whereas Leon Valley is 410/Bandera and Castle Hills is 410/281 area. It really depends on exactly where you are working to know where is most convenient. If it was my choice I'd choose Castle Hills. It's close to North Star and the Quarry and is generally very quiet.

Did I say its was? Would you want to live at West Ave and 1-10 inside the loop? Yes there are some nices areas inside the loop, and I am going to requote my self since it seems most of you missed it

"Define safe? none of those areas are terribly bad. Balcones heights and Castle Hills arnt the best areas of the city, but in no way are the "bad". Leon Valley is a decent area."

So what do you consider the best areas of the city?

I went to Lee HS and had a friend that lived off West Avenue inside the loop. I never feared for my life going over to her house during the day or at night time.

Coincidentally, I went to Lee (well, ISA), and I had a friend that lived in that area (or more specifically, lived ON West Avenue). They've had one issue with a break-in, and I've had another at their house where somebody randomly showed up and stayed for awhile without coming to the door. The neighborhoods were fairly safe, but it's an area you still need common sense to live safely.

To the OP, CH has portions outside 410 that are nice, if that's an issue, but the portions inside 410 are not much different to me. I didn't feel any more or less safe in CH. BH has a somewhat rundown appearance, but I never see criminal activity. Same for LV.

I work in the area near BH and CH--it's not always the best-looking, but I've never had issues with crime outside of the one I mentioned above.

Oh geez, there are some spectacular places in Castle Hills just inside the loop. Truly amazing, beautiful gems, and really close to some nice places for shopping/eating/drinking.

Castle Hills is definitely one of the nicer areas of SA, IMO. BH is older, houses are more of the working class variety (smaller), but generally it's a nice community. Leon Valley is newer than that. I've never thought of any as unsafe. Pockets of concern, sure, but nothing significant.

The type of business you are in may predicate which homes or areas you will need to visit. Can you offer us any information on this topic? As has been mentioned, I don't see any hesitation in visiting any of these areas you inquire about if you are savvy to urban living. Having said this, where will you be living? Do you also need recommendations for a safe neighborhood in which to find a home?

BTW, welcome to a great city; do wonderful things here and flourish.

Shavano Park isn't even in the City of SA. It is a nice area but not SA. If you look at the city-data page for SP, SP has a lot of property crime but it hasn't been updated since 2006.
