Things I remember about San Antonio
I grew up in San Antonio during the 1950's and 60's. I am heartbroken to see that everything that was wonderful is now gone. Does anybody else remember?
1. The Varsity and Bandera Road drive-ins.
2. Toonies
3. Christies
4. Youngblood's Fried Chicken
5. The root beer stand on Broadway that served blackcows and purple martins.
6. Picadilly cafeteria
7. The motel shaped like teepees
8. The Nighthawk
9. Frost Bros. ads in the newspaper
10. Laughing Sal and the Fortuneteller at Playland
11. "Time for Magic" tv show
12. The scary Friday night movie with the creepy hand opening a book.
13. Chicken in a nest at the Joskes restaurant.
14. The xray machine at Guarantee Shoe store.
15 Coney Island hotdogs across from St. Mary's church.
16. The Manhattan
17. The accordian player in front of the manhattan and the blind man selling pencils
18. The smoking room at the Magestic Theater and the Colored balcony
19. The candy shop next to the Aztec theater
20. Strange's grocery store, gas station and barber shop
21. Griff's hamburgers
22. Hot Dog Haven
23. Frontier flame kissed hamburgers
24. Winn's
25. Ann & Tom Brown's toy store
26. The Mcfarland Diamond
27. The Broadway Theater and Around the World in 80 Days
28. The Urrutia Mansion and the story of the headless girl
All gone and replaced with such mediocrity.

Funny you should mention that. I drove by there last time I was in town and I could have sworn that Randy's Rodeo was on the other side of the street where the current sign is and there was a bowling alley where the sign currently is. Of course it has been 25 years since I had been on that side of town, so the memory can be a little faulty.

The more that I think about it, it was Bandera Bowling in the 60's. It later became a country western club. I am not sure if was called Randy's at first, but it might have been. I had moved to Austin, UT in 1966 and then moved to Houston in 1968. I was in San Antonio in 1971 and I met a young lady at that club during the summer of 71. I moved back to Houston January of 1972 until January 1976. I lived just a few miles away in Inspiration Hills. I'm sure it was Randy's Rodeo by 1980. Wasn't it also a bingo parlor as well at some time?

I remember first seeing Randy's in the early 80's and it was in the same location it is now. It's famous for being where the Sex Pistols played on their (legendary) only US tour.

When I look at the Randy's sign, I could have sworn that the original sign had "Rodeo" somewhere on it.
