Friends....what are your favorite happy hour places in San Antonio? Along a similar vein what are your favorite bars/clubs for college night?

My primary concern is women. Secondary concern is drink prices. Food is not even important.

I'll throw out a few of my favorites: Sherlocks, V Bar, El Jarro......

What about ya'll?

My fiance and I can be found at NY Bar (1604/Redland Rd) on Wed/Thu nights. Chill, relaxed crowd. Not too busy but excellent bar staff.

Also try Kennedy's, Houlihan's, and Wildfish for HH. Lots of people, pretty friendly crowd. Wildfish can be pretentious at times, but most people are cool.

He asked for cheap drinks, not $12 drinks.

When I say Happy Hour, I mean the bar is already packed by 5:15 on Fridays..and stays packed until about 7 or 8. That is what I call a good happy hour.

Happy Hour crowds seemed to have died out in SA around 2001 with the internet bust & 9/11 & the rise of cell phones and internet. I remember in the late 90's, the original stonewerks and the Labratory were absolutely packed for happy hour on thursdays fridays. If you didnt get there by 5:00 you couldnt even find a parking spot.

Even some of the late night clubs like the Atrium and Park place had some good happy hour parties after work. They always gave away huge free office parties to get people in early.

Crabby Jacks was always packed for HH. Both Mama's were also hot spots. Then Champps and Fox & Hound were pretty good.

All of that just died out, I mean people still go out, but back then it was like on Friday's people were rushing to get to the good bars for HH and not be late. And you know what I think the cause is....cell phones and email. Back then you made plans with your co-workers during the day called your friends...and that was the plan everyone followed nobody had a cell phone to hear a change of plans. You would hear by word of mouth, "Everyone is meeting up after work at this bar", Now, with smart phones, facebook, etc. ..people weigh their options up until the last minute and pick and chose what they want to do. I think they skip HH for better plans later. I can remember if we didnt do HH, we would make plans during the day with my co-workers to meet up at 9:30 at Dallas night club, and sure enough at 9:30 about 30 people from work would show up. It was much better back in the old days.

Today, Flying Saucer seems to pull a good friday HH crowd, but it is always a sausage fest there cause they only serve beer and no hard liquor. When the weather nice nice, stonewerks at the Rim and most of the bars at La Cantera seem to have a pretty decent HH, but nothing I would call great. Broadway 5050 & Twin Peaks are usually busy after work too.

But for great HH prices that died out too, I believe TABC regulated that away, I remember the days of penny drinks & half price drinks & free buffet for HH, not nowadays all you get is a $1.00 off & an olive to snack on. I dont even think advertising HH specials on the radio is legal anymore.

That's pretty much it - TABC changed a BUNCH of their regs, the city fathers all crowed about how great it was......and the bars took the hit. Nevermind the waitstaff that lost jobs/income, lower sales taxes, etc. And obviously, it really put a huge dent in the DUI problem, right???

I like hole in the walls. Always got cheap drinks. We used to frequent a few places off San Pedro near North Star. One being Marty's Cocktails. Coco Beach is another good one. Hills N Dales for sure. 3 Legged Monkey and Mitchell's near Castle Hills are also cool.
