Hoping someone can help. I will be coming down there early Oct. and have been looking at car rental at the airport. The taxes for renting a car are almost as much as the rental itself. Wondering if there were any shuttles at the airport that go to rental places off site, so taxes would be cheaper. A Compact rental for 5 days will cost me almost $200 and 72 dollars of that is in taxes.

Thanks for your replies....

Technically most of the rental places are "off site"(as they are across the highways and what not) but they are AT the airport. The only locations that have the shuttle are the ones "at" the airport

Of the $72, how much is airport related and how much is city, facility and state taxes? I think a cab ride to an off site location would be $10-15 each way. The off premise facility, of course, would not charge an airport fee; i am not sure of the facility tax.

Are you coming to visit or meet someone in SA? If the later, have that person rent the vehicle. The airport tax does not apply to a local resident.

Thank you both for the advice. Unfortunately, I'm just flying into SA and driving over to Corpus for a wedding. Think I'm going to be SOL. Can't wait to visit your neck of the woods though.

How did they ensure that it doesn't apply?

You are better off taking a taxi to an off-site location. Renting at the airport, you will be subject to the following fees: Concession fee $1.96/day, Consolidated Facility Fee $4.00/day, Energy Surcharge about .54/day depending on company, Airport Tax 11.1%, and Sales Tax of 15%. Renting at an off-site location will free you from the Airport Tax and Consolidated Facility Fee. Our City Council is always finding ways to take more money from this city's citizens and tourists.

I guess you don't travel much? This is standard for every city.

Also, If you're recommending that he take a $20 (or more) taxi each way to avoid $40 or $50 in fees, well, wow.

You are right, I do not travel much. But I do work in the travel industry. An economy car at $29.99/day works out to $46.58 with taxes and fees. So a one week rental has $116.13 of taxes and fees asociated with it. The Concession Fee was to pay for the construction of the Alamo Dome. It was to expire once construction was completed. That was about 20 years ago and car rental companies are still collecting this fee thanks to our city council. I dont's agree with how our elected officials continue to asses taxes and fees once the original purpose of the tax or fee has been fulfilled.

The Alamodome continues to cost the city over $1 million/year to operate... much to my chagrin.

Hopefully the rental car money is still going to it.
