I concur with Turtle MoM- Fox Grove is your best option of all the areas listed

I find it hard to believe that it only takes 20 minutes to get from Bulverde all the way over to Walzem in 20 min. It takes us 15 min. in the morning, to get from Walzem to Northwood Elem. and 10 min. at pick up in the afternoon. I would think that it would be about 30-45 min. with all the traffic. I think Fox Grove is nice also, just maybe to far for Rackspace employees to have to commute to and from. I have to get 3 kids ready every morning and time is very precious. I might be wrong?

Gotta remember that I'm coming from an area where a 45 minute commute is actually considered short
Most folks that have any sort of commute around here are anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on if they're working in the DC area or if they're lucky enough to have a job outside of Baltimore. If you live outside of the beltway, and work downtown, you're looking at 45 minutes as a minimum.
Different culture, I guess.

I have to chimme in with mamabecker about Windcrest. My wife and I have traveled and have lived all over the world and have now retired to Windcrest. We find the people to be well traveled and polite. The town is like being in Europe, where everyone greets each other and takes pride in their homes and their hospitality. We walk in the mornings with our grand kids and late in the evenings and feel very safe and happy to see our neighbors come out and join us. We have lived in Alamo Heights and other well known areas, but find we get more for our money here. Windcrest has a Via hud (bus) located near by, which is also wonderful when parking and going downtown for sports events and theater. Just give it a look during your next visit. Things will be developing around Windcrest do to the hard work the council has but in with there efforts to work with Rackspace. Under the Windcrest web page you can read more about the news and developement efforts. I hope this helps you in your efforts to find a home, but everyone must decide for themselves what they want and need in life. We have found our happiness here! Our concern is that more relocators and to much developement, might bring a lot of attention to our well kept secret and life might change... and we end up like all the other exploited communities out there. We put our trust in our city leaders.

Well much of your travel is probably on surface streets, which takes more time. My hubby takes Evan's Rd. east, to Green Mt. Hops on the 1604, 35 south to 410, takes the Alamo Heights Exit to Perrin Beital, and that is where he works. He also goes at 7:30 or so. 30 min at the most, and that is when there is an accident. We avoid Bulverde Rd. and 281 and all costs. One morning it took me 45 minutes to get to Reagan which is 7 miles away. I can't wait til our new high school is built closer!
Where you live in Windcrest, your kids go to Northwood? That is a great school. I used to substitute there often. I don't mind that area, and agree there are many positive things. We just personally like being out of the city, although in 5 years time we will be more in the city than we would like!

I did school choice to attend Northwood. My kids were to go to Windcrest, but I am going to wait another year until I feel the school is back on track. This was not a concern until we had Karina happen and we had over crowding in the schools and unrest. My kids are to young (pre-k and kinder) to deal with other things beside going to school and having a great day with friends. Things are looking better now but, we will see. I would like to have them attend Windcrest again, all of their grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins live in Windcrest and it would be nice to walk to school and play after school at the playground. I do not want to have to drive to Northwood always. We used to live in Alamo Heights area and now I have to drive over again because of school. Who knew it would be this way. But next year it will be back to normal again, we hope.

As an update - I've been pre-approved for a decent amount w/o having to take the sale of my existing home into consideration. Wee. (and if I -were- to have it taken into consideration, they could pre-approve me for a significant amount more... even beyond what I consider affordable. Silly people.)
Once I determine a place to live, I'm going to need to locate daycare - any affordable centers and home-based providers in the 78259 area?
No offense meant to mamabecker or anyone else who's been chiming in for Windcrest, but I am planning on sticking to looking outside of 1604 for now. I'm planning a drive through Windcrest to take a look at things, so that's not necessarily in stone yet, though.

Have you considered 78261? Just north of 1604 and outside city limits, there are many family friendly neighborhoods, most with a park & pool. The Village at Stone Oak also provides shopping nearby. And if you're a golfer, there's a proposed PGA course coming to this area.

I truthfully hadn't been - it almost seems a bit too far up 281 for the commute down to Wurzbach, and then Windcrest after the move over there.
I"ll take a look at listings, though, and see if anything jumps out at me
Quick looking found one development that actually does meet what I'm looking for (schools, pricing, general location). Couple miles further north from where I'd been concentrating my searching at, but definitely not too far. Thanks for the suggestion!
