Red face arts in san antonio!

hi there~
i'm moving to the san antonio area from chicago very soon. i have a theatre degree and am very interested in continuing to be involved in acting and the arts scene in san antonio. i was wondering what san antonio is like, culturally speaking, especially when it comes to theatre. the city i will actually be living in is la vernia, and it seems like my chances of finding an arts community there will be slim to none, so any information on organizations in san antonio or la vernia would be much appreciated. thanks!

There are alot of local small theaters and a few theatre companies that are above the local type of the weekend show in the barn.
Josehine Theatre and Guadelupe Theatre come to mind. The Guadelupe often brings in aspiring talent from LA and NY. I've seen several good shows there.
San Pedro Playhouse is another high profile very talented group.

Default Culture Shock

Check out the Blue Star Complex on Alamo in King William District. A one-stop-shop for arts in SA. The Jump Start Theater there is a great playhouse with unique shows. Something to consider about San Antonio is the high population of Chicanos/Spanish speakers. This is a heavy influence on the arts and is a passion that shows in the work. If you love that, SA is great for you.

There's a group called SATCO that has a lot of information about theater in San Antonio - from community theater to the professional joints. They have a weekly newsletter featuring "what's playing" and "coming soon", and also have a newsletter of audition listings...

I haven't found the theater scene here to be outstanding, but it's not lacking either.
