Some of the best areas of the city are around ft Sam. Alamo heights, Terrell hills, olmos park, northwood, oak park, windcrest, Terrell heights, oakwell farms are all within 10-15 minutes of base. Anyone who tells you to live outside 1604 and drive to ft Sam is mentally ill

I second this. I don't have personal experience with Alamo Heights ISD beyond attending for a year at Howard Elementary, but it is one of the better school districts in Bexar County. I have a sibling who attended Northwood Elementary for a few years and it was a great school (late 90s to early 2000s). I attended Garner MS in the late 90s and MacArthur HS in the early 2000s. My sibling attended both more recently. Those are also decent schools.

What kind of area are you looking for? New subdivision in the suburbs? Older established semi-suburban neighborhood? Urban/historic?

Well, I personally like newer homes and the semi-suburban homes. Also I think I cannot afford the historic ones. I am looking for houses in the 200,000 - 250,000 range. For me good schools and save neighborhoods are important. My husband wants a short commut and a big yard. Do you know how long the drive from New Braunsfels to Ft Sam Houston is?

New Braunfels to Ft. Sam is around 40mins in clear traffic. Depending on what time he will leave in the morning, it could be longer due to traffic incoming to town. Traffic out on 35H until you get past Schertz parkway or even further will be longer. Traffic seems to start getting congested around 35N/410 and 35N/1604 at around 4pm.

I highly suggest New Braunfels, Schertz/Cibolo, Stone Oak and the areas on the far north side of San Antonio.
Yes, traveling into the inner city and Ft. Sam will be longer but those North areas are SAFE and CLEAN and have the best schools overall. Alamo Heights in a nice inner city area with great schools but it is still inside the 410 Loop and as all locals know, that is usually means unsafe.
Please do research and ask a realtor to give you the honest truth on where in San Antonio is safe.

I agree with schertz/cibolo area. It is quiet, safe, clean and has many military families since it is close to Randolph AFB, newer homes and great schools. Without traffic, the commute to FS might be 15-20 min. During morning/evening rush probably more like 40 or more, depending when you get on the road. (630 a.m. is a good time and before 430 p.m.) If you wanted to go to New Braunfels for all of its historic charm and water/outdoor activities it would only be a 10 min drive. Schertz/Cibolo is also close to San Antonio if you need a "big city" but has small town feel.
