Hi,
My first thought at the title is that it is really an "Indian Frybread Taco".
I am a frybread fan. (both parents are mixed cultured 50/50 Euro and Indian American).
Gen
p.s. I got a kick out of Taco Bell coming out with 'chalupas' (nothing but an imitation frybread taco...

You never heard of a frybread taco? The are the best. Okay, well, they are much better than a chalupa because your bread is just freshly fried and puffy and crunchy and well...I gotta git making some because I miss them too. OH, wait, they are more like a torta than a taco, I think but the bread is crunchy.
Hey, I just did a quick google search and found a link with a picture of an Indian taco, (note this is exactly how they look).

I love frybread. We are headed to Washington DC this week and I have heard at the Museum of the American Indian there is a cafe that serves frybread!
My favorite thing is Navajo Tacos - you take the frybread and serve it like a chalupa (or tostada for the Californians!) with chili, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and sour cream. Yummy!
It is a flour flatbread fried up, very much like donut. In Utah they fry them up and serve them with honey and butter and call them "Scones" (even though most people think of scones as a biscuit type of bread.)

Frybread...
....mmmmmmmmm Indian Frybread!!! Growing up in Phx, I always looked forward to the Arizone State Fair. There were several places to buy frybread, and each one served it with either honey, powdered sugar, or refried beans and cheese. Always hard to decide which to get. mmmmmmmm....... haven't had that in over 20 years and I can still remember how yummy it was!
And funny, that's what Puffy Tacos kinda reminds me of. (just a little! ) BTW, the puffy tacos at Oasis on McCullough just across the street from First Presbyterian Church are pretty darned good!

Hi,
Heya, since I've been here in San Antonio, (since July 22nd) I have really not found a 'place' for tacos, carne asada and so on.
I'm used to little diners or greasy spoons from Chicago that are pretty darn genuine. Maybe I am still too much an outsider to recognize them easily but, anyone know of something near me that I am overlooking? I'm located near Alamos Heights, (just inside the loop between Broadway and N. New Braunfels Ave).
Oh sure, I can always go on and make my Indian, aka Navajo, aka frybread tacos but, I'd like to know where I can drive to to pick something up on the way home sometime.
Thanks!

It's worth it to try at least once to make puffy tacos. Just make sure the masa is fresh, or it won't stick together. The oil should be hot also, about the temp for making sopapillas, or they won't puff up.
Take a small chunk of the masa, roll it flat, slide it into the oil, and poof! I still think this is neat.
Frybread sounds like what DH and I would do with flour tortillas.
I've always understood that a fried, flat corn tortilla topped with stuff was a chalupa.
Darn it, now I want a puffy taco from Taco Hut...

The restaurant chain Los Tios here in Houston has AWESOME puffy tacos. They call them "Golden Tacos". So yummy!
