My Husband and I are relocating to San Antonio in March and don't know where to begin... We just know its time to move on, Florida is just getting out of hand, you cant buy a decent house for under $250k not to mention Taxes and insurance. We are hoping that San Antonio will give us that small town feel and still be able to have the Major city Shopping and attractions. I don't want to be stuck in traffic all day to run my everyday errands. We are in a small town out side of Tampa (Brandon) but I can be at the airport in 25 min any and every shopping and restaurant with in 10 min .. Busch Gardens and Adventure Island with in 20 min.
My husband is in the Trucking Industry as a driver CDL class A. He can transfer with his company but is also looking for new opportunities. March is a couple of months away but not sure where to look. His company is in Bexar county on the northeast side. Can anyone give me any information like maybe some areas or town that would suit our needs and the don'ts? we have a little one so are also in need of good schools. Thanks

Hi there, I've lived in both Tampa and SA. The area of SA that is probably most similar to Brandon is the Schertz/Cibolo/Universal City area. There is a large shopping center there with another one going up across the freeway. Housing prices probably are going to be less than what you've described in FL (though property taxes are on the high side to make up for TX having no state income tax). Best of all, this is the same area of SA that your husband's company is located in.

Driving distances from the area vary depending on time of day and construction, but generally it'll take you 20-30 minutes to get to downtown, 15-20 to get to the airport, and 35-45 to get to SeaWorld and Fiesta Texas (which are on the west and northwest side, respectfully). Schertz was recently named by money magazine as the best "small" town in Texas, and Cibolo has grown over 230% since 2000, so it's definitely a booming area with good schools and lots of housing choices. As far as crime and a general feeling of safety, SA definitely comes out ahead of Tampa in my opinion, although I do miss the beaches! Luckily the beach is only 3 hours away from here, but it just isn't the same as packing up a cooler and heading across the bay to Clearwater. . .

Regardless, Welcome to Texas!

Converse would be another good choice. There are many new homes going up in the general area of all of the places mentioned above, so you should have an easy time finding something in your price range.

If you want to get out of the congestion, you might also look at La Vernia and St Hedwig.

As oldmanshirt said, the Schertz or Cibolo area of far northeast San Antonio will probably the most ideal place for you. There is convenient shopping in Schertz itself as well as along 35 from 1604 to Schertz and Cibolo. Also at 1604 and 35 is one large shopping center and another one currently under construction as well as a large mall about one mile from those two shopping centers.

The drive to the airport should be between 20-30 minutes depending on either (no) construction or (no) congestion.

Brandon High School C/O '81 here! Like the others have said, you will find a lot of similarities with places in San Antonio. The places mentioned - Converse and Scherts sound about right - sort of like Brandon in the 90'' when the massive growth started. If you want to recreate the Brandon of the late 70's, then consider the further out towns like Lavernia and such.

The key thing you will be wanting to locate is a place with good schools and as you look through the different threads on this forum, you can find multiple links and discussions about the different school districts.

Feel free to e-mail me.
