Good, reasonable furniture upholstery?
I have a sofa and a daybed that I'd like to have re-upholstered, and new cushions made for the daybed. Anyone know who does good work for reasonable in the SA area?
I'd prefer someone who does NOT require you to choose from their fabrics only, unless they have a really diverse selection. Both pieces are vintage midcentury modern, so I need to go with something classic for that era, and most upholsterers in my experience don't carry what I'd need.
Any first-hand experience out there?

McCune upolstory off Broadway at Jones. Near Cavender Cadillac. I took them the fabric I wanted on a chair and they were very helpful and not expensive. They didn't mind at all that I brought the fabric with me and didn't buy thiers.

Frankly, I don't remember. I wanted the chair done in a certain fabric and hunted for the fabric, found it and took the chair and fabric to them. The price wasn't outrageous. I just can't remember what it cost. It was 2 or 3 years ago. I guess I would say compare other places you've learned of to see if they are out of line in the price. I didn't think they were.

But, do you recall Paul Thompson's column in the Express-News? He was the consummate consumer advocate. After Paul passed away, Roddy Stinson took over the spot. Roddy is no Paul Thompson.
Paul frequently took Arrow to task for taking advantage of elderly clients. It caused quite an uproar at the time, with Paul being asked to quiet it down and Arrow pulling advertising from the paper. Yet, as soon as another instance was brought to his attention, another column outlining some exorbitant fee Arrow was charging some elderly lady while holding her couch hostage. I've heard similar stories by word of mouth. Even if they have changed, I wouldn't do business with them on principle alone.
I've always wondered about that little shop off Austin Highway near the McNay. I've seen some nice work sitting outside their shop, but never known anyone who's dealt with them.

I remember seeing a story on one of the TV channel help guys about Arrow charging a woman $16,000 for a reupolstry of a couch and drapes to match. It was outrageous and Arrow insisted it was the price agreed to before the job was done. It was the daughter who went nuts when she learned what her mother had spent.
Arrow finally agreed to reduce the price by about 2 or 3 thousand dollars.
I think I would definitly stay away from Arrow.
Who ever heard of drapes and a couch for $16,000????????? Maybe the White House or Buckingham Palace. They have enough windows.
I've heard too many stories about rip offs from Arrow to not go near them.

Sorry, I wasn't recommending them! I haven't heard anything about them except for those nails-on-a-chalkboard commercials. They should be ashamed, though!
