We need advice on which elementary schools would be best for our limited verbal daughter. We like Boerne and Helotes. Not sure which schools could best meet her needs? We also have a 7th grader and 3rd grader. Any advice would be much appreciated. Hubby commutes to I-10 and 410 area.

I would say Helotes because it is NISD which is a larger school district with more resources for special needs children. We have an autistic son and have been happy with the services and support he has gotten through NISD. According to their website, NISD has "over 11,000 students qualifying for special education and related services" and "over 2,000 teachers, instructional assistants, speech pathologists, special education coordinators, licensed school psychologists, and other related service specialists is dedicated to providing exceptional individualized services to students."

Although according to this, Boerne ISD has 700 special needs students, more than I would have imagined.

Hope that helps!

Cheers! M2

Do you know what type of instructional setting she will be in? I ask because not all elem. schools in NISD have ALE(formerly life skills, most restrictive enviroment on campus) classrooms. They will bus your child to the closest school that does have an ALE setting, and I know some parents are not too thrilled about having their children at different schools. NISD has an amazing Special Education deparment. It just comes down to your daughter's specific teacher and your involvement! Also, if your daughter qualifies, NISD has Reddix!!! It's a post-hi, vocational school/program after your daughter graduates high school until age 22. I know from personal experience Kuentz elem. has been great with a child dear to my heart

That is true, our son had to move to a different elementary school after the one he was in closed its ALE program. But his new school was still very close, a few miles versus a few blocks. It turned out to be a good thing as he had to start riding the bus in lieu of us walking him to class, and that gave him a little more experience in being independent...

Cheers! M2

Bob Beard Elementary in Sonoma Ranch (mailing address is Helotes, but I think the neighborhood is in SA city limits) has an excellent special education department. Their staff was very attentive with my then pre-k daughter and they are very accomodating with parents' questions.

Don't know anything about Helotes but from my experience Boerne doesn't always consider least restrictive environment first, as they are supposed to. Just because a student has limited verbal skills does not mean that they are not very bright and cannot be in gen. ed. but this district tends not to think that way. Perhaps Northside is more progressive(?) My advice is, get a good advocate if you are headed to Boerne.

Have you since moved and enrolled your daughter? I ask because I am being relocated to San Antonio in June and I have a daughter with Aspbergers. I was looking at either Boerne or NEISD schools as that's what a friend recommended. My daughter is in a mainstream classroom. But receives sensory, occupational, and speech therapy.

Does Krueger have ALE? Sounds as though Kuentz does. We have a 3 yr old with Autism. We are renting in the Krueger area until we can build in Helotes.

Kuentz ALE is top notch! Sorry, I am not familiar with Krueger.
Also, keep in mind, just because a school has a good reputation does not mean their Special Ed department is the same.
