Affordable to me means a 3-4 bedroom apartment for no more than $1,000. Is that possible renting up north in a nice neighborhood? From what Im reading I see most likely my husband will be working done south due to trucking jobs, so what suggestions can you give me as to where I should look to live so there isn't such a long commute but at the same time living in a good neighborhood. Once again I appreciate all the input everyone has given me. You guys are great!

As far as the weather goes. Is it 100 all year round....or some what comfortable sept-may?

1000 for a 4 bedroom is going to be a stretch.

It starts to cool down around October, it gets "cold" from say december to feb

Climate in San Antonio, Texas

Anyways, moving here from NY will definitely be a change in pace. Since the OP is a nurse, I would suggest finding out which hospital she will be working at before buying a house. I would definitely rent first. Hospitals are scattered all over town but most of them are in the medical center. Just my two cents.

The husband's job shouldnt matter as much in terms of finding a place since he is a truck driver but then I don't know if the husband is "over the road" or plans to be local.

I agree, 1k per month for 4 bedroom might be a stretch. For that price you might be able to find a house, however, utilities might be higher in a house. Unfortunately, most of the desirable neighborhoods are not on the south part of town, so one of you will have to be commuting far. I would recommend commuting from the I-10 rather than from 281 or 35.

For 1k, you'd be able to rent a house with 4 bedrooms in a good neighborhood. A 4 bedroom apartment will run you at least 1,500-2,000 a month in a good neighborhood.

1200 should get you a nice house in a decent neighborhood. avoid the east and west sides of town and the south, as the schools and neighborhoods are not going to be what you'd want to raise a family in. southtown is another place you might hear mentioned, but dont fall for it. Stuff goes on there that you would not want your little ones exposed too.

stone oak, brackenridge park are 2 good areas to look into

you will find a lot of medical work here, as thats probably the biggest industry in SA (maybe insurance is, but theyre really close). schools will be equally as nice in the areas i mentioned. YMMV though!

besides Stone Oak, maybe the Medical Center around Babcock and Wurzbach. Older neighborhoods, so maybe more affordable than Stone Oak

Thanks so much for all of your input. I was really looking into Stone Oak. Did some research and doesn't seem too expensive to live in. Heard schools are great. But I think you are right regarding the commute for my husband...might be too much for him because he is not OTR. he would be coming home every night, so now you guys have me thinking what I should do. I don't think he will mind that much since he will want the kids to be in good schools. Do you guys happen to know what the pay is for a nurse in the Stone Oak area or other areas in SA? Is the pay better in better neighborhoods?

Are you an RN?

I don't think it matters what part of town you live on; it most likely matters what health system you get on with. My SO worked for the state for awhile and didn't make very much compared to what he makes now with a health system. He works downtown and the rate at the hospital downtown is comparable to what he was offered to work in the med center and stone oak.

Good Luck!
