PLEASE folks do NOT go to Walmart and those other places and drop your loose change into those machines that charge YOU 10%!!!! IF you go to an SSFCU or check with your local bank....MOST have a machine you can use for FREE and not lose out on 10% of what you have saved in lose change!!!! Hope this helps!

Coinstar machines (available at every HEB that I know of) don't charge any fee if you take the payout as a gift card. In fact, there's a deal on right now that if you cash in $20 or more worth of change and take your payout as a $20 or higher Amazon Gift Card, they'll give you an additional $5 credit at Amazon for MP3 music!

RBFCU does it free for members and will do it for a fee (not sure how much) for non-members.

Our poor little "Sunshine fund" at work was getting ripped off at the rate of 10% because the Amn in charge never realized this is a FREE service offered at so many banks....reason for my post.

LOTS of folks save their loose change, and others have sunshine funds or other "change" kinda funds....PLEASE use all the money that is donated or you receive to help your fund....and skip the percentage take!

I don't blame the coinstar machines for taking a percentage to pay for the use of the machine itself but I think 10% is way too high. I figure that it can't possibly cost a lot to maintain these machines but again I don't know the operating costs.

It wouldn't be much of a business model for Coinstar to produce and service the machines if they did it for free but I agree that 10% is high. As Bo mentioned, they do have partnerships with various business for gift cards that will allow you to get the full value for your coins. If you order items from Amazon anyway, then your aren't really losing anything.

My bank, Generations FCU has a coin machine in the lobby but I'm not sure if it's for non-member use.

The Coinstar machines I have used inside HEB charge 3%. Don't recall seeing one that charges 10%...that's too much.

Coin Star popped me for ~8% last weekend at the Babcock/Huebner HEB. But... c'mon. I don't use cash so loose change is virtually garbage to me. I took that $20 to Goodwill and bought a 'new' monitor that I'm posting with right now. :-P
