I think I found a way drunks can go the wrong way without executing an outrageous hairpin turn. The below Street View of an area I recently passed through shows a two-way access road. A drunk might not see the Do Not Enter signs and mistakenly use an exit ramp as an on ramp and proceed going the wrong way. Scary scenario, but more plausible than my aforementioned hairpin turn scenario.

But they usually are already going the wrong way on the access then they enter the freeway on one of the freeway exit ramps. Or at least thats how I think they do it.

Looks like access roads should be build idiot-proof - just one way. Some are designed so, but many are not.

That's what I just said but in order to for you to make acess roads idiot proof yo wouldn't have any exit ramps.

Maybe those kinds of spikes that puncture your tires if you back up over them, or in this case go reverse on an exit ramp, might do it. Seems like it would have to be a major problem to do something this drastic though.

I have never seen Wrong Way signs with red lights flashing very brightly, before my 1st 2 year stay here.
Just saying! No Offense!

They've thought about using those, but sometimes emergency vehicles have to enter the wrong way.
