My oldest granddaughter is now in first grade in San Antonio, and I have moved to Michigan. I want to keep up with what is trendy or popular for girls in SA so that I buy and send the right gifts. I asked her via Facetime what is popular in first grade, ie what the girls are wearing, accessories, etc. and she said "Rockstar". I pressed for a little more info and got "guitars and musical notes on clothes". Can any of you cool moms, dads or grandparents give me a bit more information? Thanks much.

(In the last year she has told me about the feather hair accessories and messenger bags. Are these still "in" or not? I did get her some custom made hair accessories from Etsy for Christmas, and her mother got her a messenger bag).

In first grade, mom should be making the clothing discissions.

The kids at my daughter's school (she's in 2nd grade) wear tshirts, loose fit jeans (in other words, not skintight jeans), or denim skirts with leggings underneath. My daughter wanted tshirts from Children's Place with the graphics on them, guitars, music notes, cutesy skulls, that kind of thing. Sparkly things are popular, like skirts that are covered in sequins (but you have to handwash those, so her mom might not like them).

The feather hair accessories aren't popular anymore, they're at Big Lots which is usually the last stop for formerly trendy things before they get to the dollar store.

Last year my daughter's prize possession was a pair of knee-high Converse shoes. I still see the older kids wearing those, and my daughter plans to wear them again when the weather cools off.

Mom will have the final say when I send any clothing items, won't she? I know what is proper and what is not proper for a first grader. Actually, I am more likely to send popular accessories or items used in school. She likes Hello Kitty but I don't know if other girls are into Hello Kitty, and I don't want to buy things that would cause her to be made fun of or bullied. Cliques start early, even in day care.

Crazy 8 is a great store...if you don't have one in Michigan, maybe a gift certificate for the one in SA. Lots of kids around here are wearing clothes from there now. Cute clothes, affordable and -- best of all -- age appropriate.

My girls that age also like anything pink / purple, sparkles, tees with kittens or puppies or flowers, pretty dresses. It's hard to go wrong at this age.

So you moved back to Michigan?!?

Amazing how fast that fad went away. The beginning of the last school year at my daughter's elementary, I saw it everywhere. This year... nothing!

Oh, my daughter likes Hello Kitty, but if it is pink (or fuschia, magenta, etc.) or sparkly, that will work just as well.

If she likes Hello Kitty then get her that. Why do you want her to be in a clique and not be original? As for being made fun of or bullied, I don't know a kid who doesn't go through it at least once. Teach her to be strong and hold her ground. That's what we did with our daughter. She wore what she liked and when other kids were mean her feelings may have been hurt but she stood up for herself. She's small but loud. We don't call her Scary Kitty for nothing

Hrm. My 1st grader wears a uniform to her public school (khaki bottom, white or green shirt). But outside school, she is fortunately completely uninterested in fads or trends.

it's sweet you want to keep up with your granddaughter's interests, but do you really want to encourage cliques/fads/trends?

Oh my God. She's sounding quite like a normal little girl, and a normal grandmother. Let her wear what the other girls are wearing, or whatever she wants that is age-appropriate.

Thank you all for your replies! My comment about cliques and being bullied was made because I do not want her made fun of or ostracized for being different. When my daughter was 3 (1981) and I enrolled her in a new pre-school/day care, the cliques had already been established! I was surprised to see this so young. I don't want her to join one or to be a bully. I want her to fit in with what is popular rather than that girl who is "different". We all know how cruel kids at any age can be. Also, from my own memory....when I was in kindergarten, I had brown rain boots. It rained one day and I got to my classroom and everyone was wearing red rain boots. I felt embarrassed/funny even at age 5 being different around my peers.
