Just curious, does anyone drive 151 to 90 at approximately 6:30-6:45 AM? I am considering a job change and want to see how much longer--if at all--it would take me to get to work. Also, what is the best route to 151 from Culebra/Tezel? Is it quicker to cut through Westover Hills, go all the way to 410 and then hit 151, or 1604 to 151? Thanks for any help!

I hear that the 151 stretch between 1604 and 90 is much more congested these days than it was last year. This comes from some someone who makes that commute between 6:30-7:15 AM.

My vote is for cutting through on Westover Hills. If you go all the way to 1604, you're going north to come south. If you go to 410, you have to deal with all the traffic and lights along Culebra. Since we moved from the Les Harrison area to the Tezel/Gilbeau area, that's the only way we go to get on 151.

Nice going, you just tipped off a few hundred others and now the shortcut is hammered.

I drive 151 to 90 in the morning and it is a lot worse than it was last year. It is a huge mess getting on 151 from Culebra in the morning. I get on 151 at Wiseman Blvd at about 6:40, it takes me about 15 minutes to get to 90.
I don't know why it has gotten so much worse in the last 6 months or so but traffic is literally stopped in the fast lane at the 410 exit. Then it slows down again before you hit 90.

BTW, does anyone know why it has become so congested just in the last 6 months?? I know there is growth out in the NW area but this seemed to have just happened overnight.

it gets backed up because 151 is probably the #1 road for sloooow left lane drivers.. I don't know what it is that attracts them, but the speed limit is 65 and more often than not there's an idiot going about 50 in the left lane with absolutely nobody in front of them and they're usually parked alongside another person going the exact same slow speed. I've driven 151-90 from Military around that time a few times and it's beyond annoying.. It might actually be faster to go down 1604 to 90, especially as more and more people try to cram on 151, and drive slow in the left lane... or you can just leave earlier. I know for a fact it's a smooth, easy drive in before 6:00 AM...

maybe there's a traffic cop or two reading this thread and they can do something about the left lane huggers. somebody needs to

I totally agree with you about the left lane slow drivers. I just don't get that. I typically drive the speed limit or faster and even I get in the right lane if nobody is there. I save the left lane for passing.
It is so funny when someone is in the left lane going 55 and there is a big ol' line of cars behind them and going around them. I get up there to go around them and they don't even know that they are causing a problem. It is usually some little old person probably on their way back from a doctors appt. LOL!! I just have to laugh. But sometimes it is just an idiot

Back on topic, I am thinking about taking 1604 all the way to 90. I used to go that way. If 151 keeps like it is, I will be trying that route soon.

That seems to have become the norm for SA driving in the last ten years or so. If the speed limit is 65 about 50% are doing 65 mph about 25% are doing 50 mph and about 25% are doing 90 mph. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's day or night, dry or rainy/icy.

1604 is a breeze, except the "dumb" light at Marbach.. for some reason it is on a schedule and makes no sense at all. I'm usually out there around a little after 5:00 AM and I hit a red light there literally 99% of the time (I think I've made it through on green once or twice). The worst part is you have to wait for it to cycle around and it's usually turning green for absolutely nobody at all (go figure at that time of the morning). This is a complete waste of gas and manages to bunch up the few drivers that are actually out at that time of the morning and about 95% of them are going south on 1604.

I'm going to look up who to contact to complain about this. It's a time waster and, more importantly, a gas waster.. my car does a good enough job eating gas without wasting a few minutes every morning waiting for nobody...

You can try to contact these people:
City of San Antonio - Transportations Group - Traffic Operations Section

I don't know if they are the ones but they might be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck~
