Last time I came here, I don't think I saw such a strong presence of cops patrolling every corner. The number of homeless has seemingly increased as well. I can't go in any restaurant/shoppe/store without seeing them there. Has anyone else noticed this or? It has certainly made me more nervous about walking around at night. For instance, I was walking to a Thai restaurant tonight in downtown and I was constantly getting stares from 'suspicious' people on the same street the restaurant was located. I ended up in a big alley, only for a second, thinking the restaurant was located there and saw two young, Hispanic guys on skateboards. The looks they gave me... It was as if they were going to jump me if I walked further down that alley! Am I paranoid or?

Personally, I think you're paranoid. I walk the area around downtown routinely w/o issue - and my head IS on a swivel just as a matter of course. IMO, the Austin DT area is much more nasty than that of SA, and either would be considered pristine by comparison to many other major metro DT areas.

Eh... Not by a long shot. Really, there is no comparison, and I'm not being biased as I used to actually like visiting downtown San Antonio. There is only one part of downtown Austin the harbors the majority of the homeless and it's away from the heart of all of the entertainment there. 6th street can get a little crazy at times though. I'll give you that, but it's all predictable. From what I've experienced my entire week here, it's all over downtown SA.

I don't think it's paranoia. I even recorded some footage of downtown tonight on my phone to show you what I mean. I guess I'll leave that for another discussion. I was just looking for someone who has witnessed what I have. Though according to the number of reputation boosts I got from my post, I'm not the only one....

I think there has been a decline over the last 6 years due to economics. And yesterday's economic fall has me worried about everywhere in San Antonio now, not just downtown.
