To start, I'm African-American. I am looking for a place where I could get a relaxer or even just a haircut. I have tried going to Nappy Roots, Ulta, a beauty college and the beauty shop on base and have had ridiculous results everytime. It's like they are afraid of touching my hair, even though it's relaxed and not at all a fright. I have looked into places like K Charles, because I went to an Aveda salon when I was in NC and the stylists there were thorough, well-trained and up to date. Has anyone got any recommendations for a stylist that is actually good at their job? I would rather not pay in the hundreds for a cut, but at this point I am desperate. I also live on the NE side.

Thank you!

Contact the Aveda school here. They are discounted services based on the level of the student. I am sure they would appreciate the opportunity to use your hair for training. www.avedaisa.com

I only mention it as you had a good experience with them before in another area and this is their school.

Seriously, there is something wrong with hairstylists here. I drove all the way to Austin (north Austin) to get a good hair cut. I got a good hair cut and the worst color job of my life for about $300. It's horrible. I've had absolutley terrible luck with my hair here. I'm white, and my hair is not terribly difficult to do. Its like the hair people here speak another language. They don't understand the word 'subtle' when it comes to highlights or lowlights and I've yet to receive anything really worth the $$.

I'm honestly thinking of going home for the 4th of July to Chicago, to get my hair done.

Sorry I couldn't' be more helpful...I have no idea what is going on around here!

I DON'T recommend Aveda institute for anything... They're still learning and often mis-cut. There's a reason the prices are so low there.

Doo or Dye on Mulberry/San Pedro: They can cut a huge variety of hair, do amazing color and all of their stylists just plain rock. Laid back, cheap, and they are all truly nice people. Give it a shot. I've been going there for over 10 years.

I looked at their website. It's kind of off-putting and says it's not for 'the weak of heart' or something like that.

I hate edgy salons that try to keep people away. I don't need edgy hair...I need good hair.

I'm sure their intention is not to keep people away but I really don't care how into art, the community or music they are.

I just want a haircut, not trendy hipsters making me feel old!

A friend of mine used to see "Blanca" at Ross Salon on the NE side. She's not African American but apparently knows how to do hair. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

I just did a google search for The Hair Studio Sonterra. They received great reviews! They have a really nice website also. It looks like they have different levels of stylists and you pay based on their level. Let me know if you go. I'm looking for someone closer to my house.

If you're talking about Doo or Dye, you're being entirely too judgemental without even knowing these great stylists. They're not 'hipsters' (as SA doesn't even have a true 'hipster' scene) and they aren't off-putting in any way, shape or form. They have talent, time and don't charge an arm and a leg...

Don't be closed-minded. Give life a shot.
