I don't have any kids, so I do feel that I am "talking the talk", so to speak.

the reason that you pay a school tax for owning property is that you are a resident not a transient like a renter (who actually does apy the taxes via rent for the person who owns the property) and therefore you have a vested interested in making the city/county/state a better place...
that means have an educated populace--to obey the laws, take pride in citizenship, have above minimum skills so that they can be gainfully employed and contribute to the tax base themselves instead of being a drain on it by needing Sec 8 housing or other state/city subsidized services... The idea is that an educated population will create an attractive, upwardly mobile community and contribute to YOUR own well being--less crime, better jobs, viable life style for all... The taxes that home/land owners pay are a good part of the tax base that support localpublic schools but the Robin Hood tax plan also requires ISDs in certain categories to give part of their tax money back to the state for the state to send to other "needy districts"--read that Wimberly ISD is one of those the state has categorized as needing to return money to the state...but Wimberly ISD says it does not have the extra money the state says it need to pay out--so the state may confiscate some of the tax base that Wimberly ISD has until the tax money is paid-- the state also contributes its share which has not really been increased proportionately for all the programs that it expects the districts to include and fund on their own--state has not increased its funding to take into account the numbers of minority/illegal students who are flooding inot some districts and not just those along the border...Local businesses that own property also pay school taxes...so YOU and your buddiesare not singled out---if you don't like your tax base find out WHY your taxes are going up--is it because the city or county has raised the appraisal valuation--that is different from the ISD raising the rates--have the capped the rate for seniors--that will mean an ever increasing burden on younger tax payers who will have to make up the increasing taxes by paying a higher tax rate--Seniors should maybe have their taxes capped based on income but not just on age IMO-- Learn how your ISD spends money--some districts that moaned the most about needing more money they could not get from their tax base and who started the whole Robin Hood tax fiasco plan were two districts in San Antonio area who paid the HIGHEST PER DIEM travel expenses when their admins and board went out of town--more than 50 a day more than at least three districts in my area--there was no call for that--they did not want to impose fiscal responsibility and took advantage of the money the state was sending them from OTHER DISTRICTS--- I HATE THE ROBIN HOOD TAX PLAN-- and I did not realize how the federal govt stiffs local isds but it does not surprise me at all especially a Republican govt for past 10+ years--they could care less about funding anything that can't shoot or blow something up...or make money for someone on the take... Yes, but we still have a system redistributing funds through franchise tax. So, not much has changed.

FF
Sorry about the gender I have bent over and over and over and my wallet just can't take it anymore. I knew something had to be done when it start cutting into my beer money. The fact remains that taxpayers are getting the shaft, the kids are getting the shaft and the building contractors are making a fortune. Growing up in LA during the population boom, we never had so many luxurious schools being built. Schools were instututions, not million dollar palaces. |
