Good evening all,

I may have an opportunity to relocate to the Pleasanton, TX area. I've been looking at job listings in the area and they seem to be less plentiful than jobs here in the SF Bay Area of California. I am looking for jobs in the environmental sciences or mental health fields (two areas in which I have training). Anyone know if these are in demand near Pleasanton?

Also, can anyone tell me about what the culture shock is like moving to Texas from another state? I'm originally from NY and got a huge culture shock when I moved to CA, so I imagine moving to TX will be another big adjustment.

Many thanks!

Ummm...why would you move to such a small area, then be surprised that jobs are fewer?

Without knowing your background, hard to say what the cultural adjustments might be. However, be aware that that part of the country is QUITE conservative - and seeing guns in vehicles isn't unusual. It's a Texas thing - so if you can get used to that, you'll be just fine.

My only memory of Pleasanton is a very long time ago. Hopefully it's gotten better since then. It was just your typical small Texas town then. Some nice people, some corrupt and dishonest...you know. My family moved to the city after a while because some in Pleasanton had to go along to get along back then. Of course, that could happen anywhere!

You would be better off just moving up the road to San Antonio. There's a lot more jobs than Pleasanton. I had to go to Pleasanton about 7 years ago for a soccer game of my friend's daughter. Having just relocated from MA, all I could think of was the beginning of Footloose. A couple of small strip malls, a school, the Dairy Queen and a few churches with explicit Bible verses on the signs. That's about it.

Wow, you must not be looking very hard as the Pleasanton/Jourdanton area is booming due to the oil shale industry in that area!

I was just down there a few weeks ago and amazed at how much new construction is going on. Places that were empty fields the last time I was there just a few months earlier are now sprouting up buildings!

Just be aware that due to Eagle Ford operations, property costs have skyrocketed in that area. Oil and other companies that support those operations are snapping up rental properties like there's no tomorrow. Rent may be a lot more expensive than you suspected.

Give us an idea of what industry you work in and we can provide some suggestions on possible employment. But if you're set on moving to that area, there are plenty of opportunities to work, that's for sure!

Cheers! M2

I've never seen a rifle on a rack in Pleasanton or Floresville. Last time I saw that was in the 80s. Moderator cut: Off-Topic
