Wasn't the purchase of Toyota Field for this purpose?

Just like the Alamodome was going to get us a NFL franchise. Now, the city owns it - along with all the maintenance and upkeep costs - and no property tax.

Yes, sir - World Class City!

That's the first thing that popped into my head when I read the OP's post, and before I read yours.

Sports. *yawn* So much money and time gets wasted on sports here in San Antonio it seems.

Well that settles it. Hopefully our city leaders will finally learn not to take the "Field of Dreams" route.

Maybe the city can sell it back to Gordon Hartman for half price?

IMO, it's wasted in *every* city where the taxpayers underwrite their stadiums.

Doesn't San Antonio FC play there? It isn't like they don't have a pro team playing there. Just not an MLS team.
In my opinion Austin FC is less an expansion awarded, and more MLS giving the former owner of the Columbus Crew a team so that he didn't move the Crew. He was dead set on Austin for some reason and many people didn't want to lose the team in Columbus.
Does it mean San Antonio won't get an MLS team? We probably won't ever, but if we do, it won't be for a very long time.
My personal opinion is San Antonio wasn't ever likely to get a team even before this mess happened, but it is far less likely now.

Good news is at least if you want to watch MLS live you only have to drive another couple hours north instead of 5 to Frisco.
