So about a week before its bulky pickup time in my neighborhood, it starts. The pickup trucks with husbands and wives going thru the piles of stuff taking what then want. Their trucks piled to overflowing with junk. And some look almost dangerous in how packed the truck is. How do these people find out which neighborhood is going to have pick up and when? And, what do they do with all of that stuff that they take. The big item I saw this year was the insides of mattresses. The springs and metal and stuff. They would come by and just cut all the way around the mattress and take the metal and leave the rest of it on the ground. Why doesnt the city try and control this kind of thing? It congests the neighborhood because they will park right in the middle of the street to get out and look at a pile of junk. Plus, there is no thought into how they pack the truck. That had got to be dangerous.

They look on the city's website for the schedule. They recycle the metal and probably make some decent money doing it. Doubtful it will stop so just learn to deal with it.

I LOVE bulky item pickup. What is junk to me is gold to others. If you catch me out there when you come pick it up I'll even help you load it. I needed to get rid of a fridge (working) and one guy begged me to hold it for him until he could unload his truck......so I did.

I get it, if the scavengers get to your rubbish, which is going to the dump anyways, the terrorists win!

amirite?

This has been discussed before. http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-a...-pickup-2.html

Why start a thread just to complain about people? Especially since you are complaining about those of another class. That kinda thread starting never ends well. Try posting more positive stuff if you want different reactions because even if many will, not everyone is just going to agree and begin complaining with you about people in other social classes.

This was never a thread about people of another class. It is what you make it out to be as you usually do with any thread.

But back to the point. I never did really care for people that do this because of all the increased traffic in my neighborhood but it must make the city's job easier!

In the city I used to live in, items left at the curb for disposal were considered city property. Taking them or dismantling them was therefore a crime, equivalent to taking or dismantling something from the lobby of city hall.

That's one solution.

I've dealt with these people for years now, but honestly I admire them. Most of the time they are looking for the metals they can recycle, they are working hard to get as much as they can, then they have to go back to wherever they do their work and dissemble the items to get to the components that are valueable, take them to the recycling center to just get a few bucks. Tons of hard work, for not a lot of reward.

They aren't looking for a handout from me, just the junk that I'm not going to use, does it increase traffic for 1 week out of the year in my neighborhood, yes, but most of these people are just trying to take care of themselves/families by utilizing what I no longer want and they are willing to work hard for it.

As far as the other part all I saw was a) you complaining about others in town and b) while unstated they are of a different social class. You might not be conscientious of that but it doesn't change it.

If others came complaining about those richer than them it would be just as wrong. These people are the poorest of the poor and once again a thread is made just to complain about them.
