San Antonio flirted with a ban back in 2006, but the idea faded because council members were worried about the impact it would have on family owned laundries and other small retailers. But since then, Brownsville and Austin have passed measures outlawing the plastic bags, and Bernal says if they can pull it off, so can San Antonio.

I would love to see this happen. At minimum, charge customers a dime for every plastic bag they need for groceries to encourage the use of reusable bags

I guess we are now feeling the effect of California transplants here. What comes next? A naked bike ride? I may be liberal but some of this "save the mother earth" hippie stuff is silly to me. I guess that makes me more moderate than liberal.

I have been reusing all the plastic bags I bring home. They make the best trash can liners.

As long you follow one of the three R's, you are helping the environment. Recycle, Reduce, or Reuse.

The reusable fiber bags are usually 0.99 cents. I also get them as giveaways at different venues. Banning platic bags will reduce the amount of trash on the streets. I don't see them often but I do see bags flying around the parks. Not enough people are aware of or caring about the environment. I would welcome banning plastic bags

Agreed, and I wish more people would voluntarily follow your Three R Rule. We are adamant about recycling because it was required when living in Europe, but still it's something we agree with. Unfortunately, we are the exception not the norm in SA.

If folks were more responsible on their own, we wouldn't need the government trying to impose such responsibilities on us!

MattTx, born and bred TEXAN here and I agree with the 3 r's you speak of. On occasion, I forget my reusable grocery bags and have to use plastic. When I do, I reuse and recycle them but you and I are a rarity as proven by the many plastic "flowers" seen along our streets and highways

I would miss the plastic bags but life would go on. I try to never throw one away straight from the store. Always reuse them or return them to the store. We survived before them and we would survive with out them again.


I use the Trader Joe's canvas bags and love them! The Walmart and Heb ones tear up after a short time.

Well They need to ban the use of Styrofoam cups, plastic food containers, aluminum cans and glass bottles. Why just pick on one litter? All these items are prevalent on our highways because certain people have no respect for the people and places around them.

Holy Crapola! MattTx and I actually agree on something! Somebody needs to check the temperature in hell. This plastic bag thing has nothing to do with the environment. It's about control. If you want to "save" the environment you'd have to close up all of the drive thru fast food places, close up most of the neighborhood convenience stores, and package everything in a container that is refillable. You think you see a lot of plastic bags? I see far more paper bags blowing on the wind along with burger wrappers, and waxed paper cups. The plastic bags we get are used for dog waste and trashbags.
Happiness would be a Kalifornian headed home with a Kalifornian under each arm. Yet another thing MattTx and me agree on.
