Default 4x4 rentals

Anyone know where I can rent a 4x4 for a weekend - Jeep Wranger, Hummer, etc.? We're planning on going to Padre, and I can't find anywhere that has a straightforward 4x4 rental. With the big rental places it's "this vehicle or something similar" and I don't want to get there and be stuck with something we can't take down the beach. Suggestions?

You could check to see if you could rent something down there. Maybe a dunebuggy? You won't need a 4 WD to get there and the gas will be expensive.

I agree with Bob. Rent something when you get there. Just be sure that it actually has 4wd, sometimes they will take off the front drive shaft because they don't want you to use the 4wd.

I've had luck in calling the rental place direct and ordering what I want. I use Avis on Bowie Street and if they don't have it, they go get one from another store. I've gotten Jeeps Grand Cherokee or a Cadillac...depends on my mood or need.
I imagine any of the big rental places will give you what you want...just go direct, not on the internet.
