I'm on the NW side of town and I'm looking to install a paver patio @ 7'x7'. How far do I need to dig down? I was thinking @ 4-6(I'd really like to go 4 inches... save my back) inches laying some base material like crushed granite then sand and lay pavers on top. If I just go 4 inches would I be ok or do I need to dig deeper?

Have you investigated whether you have soil down that deep? Some neighborhoods on the north side have a scant few inches of topsoil on top of solid limestone.

You need to go down far enough to account for whatever you put down as a base (sand/gravel) and the depth of the paver stone (I think two inches), so four inches sounds about right.

If your soil is deep enough, do 4" granite, then 2" sand. Lay tarpaper down under the granite, and curve it up flush w/the ground - you'll have a LOT less problem with grass/weeds growing up through it that way!

Ok so I only have about 1/12-2 inch of top soil before I hit straight rock so any ideas? Can I then just go on top with granite and sand?

I hit straight rock wherever I dig. I just use one of those heavy iron rod pry bar thingys to chisel it out +pick axe +sledge hammer. Between those 3 tools, the rock becomes a hole. With any luck, it comes out in large pried up chunks. Good luck. Do where eye protection. Shards of rocks in the eyes are not nice.
