Apparently, a lot of folks don't. According to a recent Gallup poll, only 68% of those polled in SA said they felt safe walking alone at night in their neighborhood; 31% did not feel safe, and 1% had no opinion. San Antonio tied for the 7th "most dangerous" city by that measure. Houston was worse, with only 63% feeling safe. DFW was only slightly better at 69%. But Austin tied for third "safest" with 77% feeling safe. Minneapolis-St Paul topped the list at 80%; Memphis was at the bottom at 55%.

I don't think it matters if one feels safe..the statistics that we should be looking at are if one is safe or not. IMO.

Generally speaking, yes. I worry more about problems from people in vehicles than other pedestrians

Statistics are only as good as the information they're based upon. This is just my opinion mind you, but I think in general, crime is underreported especially petty crimes, dog attacks, etc.

It's much better to have a feel for your surroundings. For me I have no problem whatsover in my neighborhood. For my daughter the answer would be no unless there was at least two of them.

I would feel safer walking at night versus driving given the large number of wrong way DUI accidents resulting in fatalities in the SA area...

I feel perfectly safe walking in my neighborhood at night, and anywhere around Southtown and most of downtown. And we do, all the time. There are some areas I wouldn't feel safe, particularly more suburban areas where there's just not that much foot traffic. What makes me feel safe are the presence of others walking, with the exception of First Friday or during large downtown festivals (with lots of drunk careless drivers).

As for stats, the stats for crime in my area suggest that almost all the crime is related to property theft in the daytime. There was one incident last year that was against an individual, but that appears to have been isolated (and was also at 8:30am) on a busy street. Everyone knows each other, and people pay attention to what is going on.

I don't even feel safe going out in my car at night! I never do unless I'm with someone. Walk in my neighborhood at night? You've got to be kidding...I won't even take the trash out. I live in NE SA. I get what needs doing during the daylight hours!
