Is there a main college atmosphere road that has restaurants, shops, bars, etc, where college kids hang out? What school environment would it be comparable to?

When UTSA was constructed it was out in the middle of nowhere, unlike other universities that are in the metro area. For that reason there isn't like a "college" atmosphere. However, there are plenty of things in the area. There are restaurants, several bars and several natural areas near the area. These all came later on but are still part of the landscape. The school was originally seen as a commuter type campus, with its location, but has recently changed its image with more student housing and on campus living options.

No real college atmosphere at all around UTSA, all suburbs and strip malls. It was built to be a commuter campus.

This is sadly true. Add to this all of the local homeowners showing organized opposition to the creation of true, dense housing options, and it just adds to more subdivisions and spread out entertainment options (e.g., bars, venues, etc.).

It might change long down the road, but it's not changing any time soon.

If you want more of a "strip" of locations, look into Southtown (Alamo St.), Tobin Hill (N. St. Mary's), the Pearl Brewery complex, Broadway in Alamo Heights, or downtown proper. Outside of those areas, there's nothing like a walkable "drag" in San Antonio.

Although I like Southtown--and especially some of the new stuff at Blue Star--I think the walkable area between N. St. Mary's, the Pearl, and lower Broadway will offer the best "entertainment district" in the city, which is why I live in the area. (And add to that the gay strip on Main St., with the new construction there, too.)

La cantera seems to be doing the small village feel with apt condos and stores and restaurants
