Don't be rational. It doesn't jive with some.

Correct. Last property tax rate increase was in 1992.

And people have the nerve to complain.

Is it a default mechanism with some people?

Property values, at least according to BCAD, has FAR surpassed inflation. Coupled with growth, revenues have certainly kept up with the population.

Boondoggles are not in the above equation.

Being cynical about the process by which information gets made public in government I do wonder if this news might not be setting the table for a future tax rate increase. The article mentioned in passing that one of the very newest council members floated that idea. Her words could be a trial balloon that's easily waved off as a newbie mistake if it raises a furor.

Default Newspapers,

Whatever will sell newspapers, is OK to Print. Whatever sells advertising and brings in revenue
is good to print.
Sensationalism will bring on hysterics and sell more newspapers yet.
Get serious.
This might be the beginning of the end of the City as we know it.

This thread as well as the news article it links to are both sensational in nature. The Express is very good at being sensational.

so if property values increase, which increase the assessed value, therefore higher property taxes, well I guess that is not a tax increase even though taxes went up.

But people make much more than they do in 1992, the last time the tax rate went up

Why should taxes be raised now or should have been in the past?
