so i recently discovered that my bank has some weird block (due to fraud they claim) on 20+ states for online purchases. if their member services line is closed for the day, guess what? youre screwed til they open. i dont think its too much to ask for there to be a 24 hour number to call to get something like that removed if theyre 'offering' it as a service. i use that term lightly, as they claim there is no way to permanently remove it.

so, hopefully someone can suggest a credit union that has lax joining rules (wife and i work in gov't if that helps) and little to no rules regarding where i can spend my money.

i was able to evade my CU's filter until recently, when they seemed to have started blocking certain paypal transactions. they might be coming out of a banned state, but its happened on account loads also (putting money into my pp account).

I know SACU likes to block. I have to use sites that use Google Checkout to use the SACU debit card on the sites I buy from.

So far I haven't encountered weird blocks with Firstmark Credit Union.

Have had no issues w/Randolph-Brooks FCU, and I buy stuff from all over the country.

I would close my account the same day. There is NO reason to block an entire state, much less 20 of them. I would be absolutely irate, and woud be there the same day to pull out my cash.

Why are you locked into a CU? I've been pretty happy with Wells Fargo and US Bank. Not as much with Chase, but still have my primary personal account with them.

Both USAA and SSFCU have treated me well over the years.

I am sure you know this already, but, you really should just use a Credit Card for any online purchases.. A lot more protection and they won't have your money tied up.

That said, I am a member of RBFCU, and I love them!

Wells Fargo may be a national bank but I have had no problems with them and debit online purchases.

I'm with Chase and I shop online all the time with no issues... I have alerts set up so that it notifies me automatically (by email) if I make a transaction over a certain amount... If I made the transaction, I ignore the email. But if it happened to be fraudulent, then you can call the bank hotline thing. I also travel from state to state as well as Canada pretty often (sometimes a few different areas of the country in the same day!) and they've never given me a problem. I guess with the alerts set up, if there was an issue, I'd be able to contact them instead.
