Interesting at HEB. Let's say you want to buy paper towels or a six pack of bottled water. Unless you explictly ask - they will not put them in bags. In fact, I've had to tell them to dig such out of the cart and bag them. Why - well, if not bagged you have to make multiple trips into the house, just to carry the paper towels. You can easily carry many bags of them. Same with the water.

Why - save the environment? No, some questioning gets the answer - HEB central told them to try to save bags. Increase profits.

This is nothing new. Walmart does the same, they put items that don't get bagged on top of the rotating rack of bags. When I worked at Kmart's grocery store, many, many years ago, we were taught not to bag some items, and told to put at least six items in each bag to minimize waste.

It used to bother me not getting things in the bag, but I've been shopping more at Sam's lately, where they have no bags, and I'm pretty much over it. At least now I don't end up with millions of plastic bags my packrat hubby wants to save for years, in case he needs them.

I'm OK with the policy, since the end result is me not having to recycle as many plastic bags. But I'd be even more OK with it if HEB provided an incentive to bring in my reusable bags, like Target does.

I can understand bigger items such as toilet rolls or baby bottle water not being bagged....but the rest needs to be bagged.

Bring your own bags. The re-usable bags are cheap and hold more than any plastic bag. Almost anything will fit into the re-usable bags neater and stands up to being carried and handled much better than plastic.

Bo, thanks, I had no idea Target did this. Tried to rep you but I've given you too much love.

Sorry, I assumed everyone knew about this. Target gives customers a nickel off of their bill for every reusable bag they bring/use to bag their purchase. It's not a huge payback, but it's a nice recognition of the fact that my effort saves the company money.

Plastic bags are banned in Austin Everyone here brings their own reusable bags to the store now. Yes, there has been a lot grumbles of people upset about how the government is "micromanaging things" but hey.. at least we don't have to deal with bags flying in the wind and catching in trees and stuff. I don't have a use for plastic bags so it hasn't bothered me one bit. Maybe SA can follow in Austin's steps. I think the city of Brownsville has banned bags as well.

I think they should ban those reusable canvass stuff.....lol, how anti establishment is that????

So unlike me.

I would love to see them bag stuff in paper bags. Most locations don't have it, when you ask for it. Some have but do not offer.
