You can rent a very nice one-bedroom in Dignowity Hill for $500-$600. We're located less than 5 minutes from Fort Sam and we're so close to Downtown I ride my bicycle there every morning. I walk along the Riverwalk to the Pearl Farmers' market on Saturdays. There are many great reasons to live here. Some of our neighbors are MD's and veterinarians at Fort Sam. All are very happy to be living here. Only a couple of those people are renting, most have purchased a home in the neighborhood. Many of our neighbors are young professionals, which might be something you enjoy. Overall, our neighborhood is very friendly and diverse. You should definitely consider it.

I've been doing some research and I've narrowed it down to 12welve 2wenty1 loft apartments and hemisview village. Would someone give me any info on the two places?

Also @SShurgot, I came upon the "Where I Live" articles on the Rivard Report and I am assuming you are the "neighborhood realty expert" mentioned in the Dignowity Hill article.

I grew up in a neighborhood in NYC that wasn't so safe but very diverse. Slowly but surely things changed and now it's a coveted neighborhood that has fortunately maintained it's diversity while becoming safer.

The "Where I Live" article piqued my interest. Would you be able to give me more info about the location?

The only real negatives I've heard about Hemisview is that the walls are thin. Otherwise, most people I know there have been happy. It's in Lavaca, easy highway access and easy access to downtown. A little bit more effort to ride your bike to Fort Sam than 1221 would be, but still reasonable. Great neighbors

I've been looking through the threads the last few days and I've found some great info but not quite what I'm looking for.
I don't want to live super far away from the base but I also don't want to be surrounded by that military feel all the time. I like to feel like I'm away from work when I leave work. I was looking at the Southtown area of San Antonio but I have no idea how far it really is from base and if traffic will make my commute even worse. I like that city feel. I am originally from New York City so it's what I'm comfortable with but I know that I have to be realistic because of budget and commute.
Ideally I don't want to pay more than $800 a month without utilities included or $900 a month with utilities included.
Alamo Heights seems to be the popular neighborhood around here. It also looks expensive. I like that it seems to be halfway between the base and downtown.
I will be living alone for the majority of the time as my wife will be off finishing med school outside of Texas. If the price is right and the area is right I'd be willing to take a studio.
Any recommendations?
I just want to say that the area around Ft. Sam is not militaryish...Not like say a military town like Kileen.

Alamo heights is real close to FS and Southtown is not all that far away either.

I rented my house in Terrell Heights to a couple from Boston who had lived at Hemisview for a year. I don't know why they left Hemisview, but they were very happy to leave.

I love the new apartments/lofts on Broadway. The area is not heavy military and would be easy to bike to Fort Sam.
