I started saying 'y'all' within about 2 weeks of moving to Texas (involuntarily, it just happened...), 15 years outside of California and I still can't get the "the" out of The 10, since it's also a CA highway. I have managed to avoid it with those which don't go all the way to CA, for the most party.

For alot of people, you can't go anywhere without first getting on Tezel- there are no shortcuts or alternative routes. This should have been done a long time ago...

Actually, there are alternate routes, you just have to know the neighborhoods around the area. There's probably a lot less traffic on Tezel right now than there will be when it opens because most of the people who live around it have found a way to avoid it.
The construction is behind, but not years behind. I think it was originally scheduled to be right around 2 years anyway...started around this time 2 years ago, so it's only a few months overdue. This is typical of the kind of "reporting" that WOAI does, though;
quote from the story: "But getting out to fill up the gas tank is the last thing drivers want to do in this area. So pumps at one station have been turned off." Tell me what station. Why? How is this relevant to the rest of the story? WOAI, home of crappy journalism.

Here I thought it was just a southern part of the state thing...but obviously this does not apply to South Texas.
I am glad I stumbled upon this board.

Sorry, had to stick that one in.

Oh, but wait!! My goodness!!!
I did most of my growing up in Los Angeles county and we ALWAYS called the freeways "The xxx"...
The San Bernardino Freeway (oldest in the state I think)... the 605.... the 405, the 5, the Pomona Freeway, the Ventura Freeway, the Golden State Freeway, the San Diego Freeway (for parts of the stretch - for others, aka the 405)... The 110.....
THEY/WE have ALWAYS referred to the freeways by prefacing the name or number with "The"......

I'm in the same place as you Pops. I'm from Malibu Canyon. The 101 went right by my house. Used to take the 405 to San Diego from time to time and would take the 5 to go up north camping. PCH was always a great drive (Hwy 1)...that one does seem to comply with Texas-spoeak.
