You are moving your family here while you attend a course? It must be a really long course..

I can't think of anything I would consider safe around Lackland. You're probably going to have to drive at least 10 miles..

I have friend that lives off Shadow Valley Drive in a neighborhood that is just southwest of Lackland, it's actually right in between Lackland AFB and their training annex. See lives in an older neighborhood that is adjacent to a new subdivision. She likes the area and I've been to her home a few times and the neighbor seems nice and clean. So, maybe check out that area or if not you could try Westcreek or Alamo Ranch.

Are you not eligible for on-base billeting or quarters? Is this a TDY or a PCS? Do you want to be really close to base? Realize that the area around Lackland is not the greatest. What are your commute wishes? There are a lot of places to rent in the area, if you are here long enough and are getting BAQ. I would recommend checking into the housing office at Lackland before you do anything.

I've PCS'd here twice in the past, as well as came here TDY numerous times during my career (I am now retired and working on Lackland as a contractor). If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me...

Cheers! M2

I am in awe at how many TLAs (three letter acronymns) that were in that one post, M2. That's impressive.

I tell my friends in the military that they learned another language that I am clueless about!

TDY = Temporary Duty (going someplace for a short period of time)
PCS = Permanent Change of Station (going someplace for a couple of years)
BAQ = Basic Allowance for Quarters (money to live off base...if you live on base, you don't get this, but you also don't pay rent)
PM = Private Message
M2 = me!

Actually, if they are only coming to Lackland on a TDY, they will stay in a TLF...

TLF = Temporary Lodging Facility (for TDY families, singles stay in the VOQ or VAQ...)

VOQ = Visiting Officer's Quarters
VAQ = Visiting Airman's Quarters

OK?

Cheers! M2

I could go on and on... but back to the original poster... how long are you here for? I'd stay away from the base and look for an apt. off of 1604. You can try to get a month-to-month place. There are also lots of apts. off of Potranco and you could hop on 151 or 410 to work.
