Clear Channel Rhythmic CHR “Wild 105.7” K289BN/101.9 KQXT-HD2 San Antonio has flipped to Regional Mexican “La Preciosa 105.7“.

I know that there are those of you that swear by Pandora, Spotify and Satelite, but for those that don't this was interesting. There are now more Regional Mexican stations than modern r&b, AC, CHR, Top 40 or whatever you want to call it. There are three....four if you count Magic. This is ridiculous. And feel free to combine this with a better existing thread if you see fit.

it is totally and completely ridiculous, as is Clear Channel, who has singlehandedly ruined free radio.

I knew that station wouldn't last. The reception was terrible. It wasn't urban enough to compete with The Beat, and it wasn't pop enough to compete with 96.1 and 94.1. We already have enough Top 40 stations, and we don't need 3 Top 40, rhythmic-leaning stations. Wild was a little less urban than The Beat and a little less pop than 94.1. There hasn't been a station that has been able to compete with The Beat and there probably never will be unless that station does what The Beat doesn't: play urban music only (no EDM and pop) and have an extensive playlist of new, semi-underground/underground, and old music. I've listened to urban stations in other major cities. The Beat is a pitiful excuse for a hip hop and r&b station.

Tejano 107.5 and Norteno 104.1 are not Regional Mexican.

92.9, 95.7 and now 105.7 are Regional Mexican. Where are you getting 6?

I may have just gotten upset about the flip, but did you read the article?

The move to Regional Mexican places 105.7 in competition with Univision’s duo of “Estereo Latino 92.9” KROM and “Tejano 107.5” KXTN and Border Media’s (About To Be L&L Broadcasting) pair of “La Ley 95.7” KLEY and “Norteño 104.1” KSAH
That's 5 with 105.7

If advertisers weren't buying commercials on those stations, the owners wouldn't be using those formats. Just because you and I aren't in the target audience for a station doesn't mean there isn't a sizable and desirable target audience for it.

It doesn't change the fact that I'm not happy about it.

Streaming (Pandora, iTunes Radio, Spotify, et.al.) is slowly but progressively killing terrestrial radio. Clear Channel, on the other hand, has done much to make this possible. For a quick, but concise reason why much of terrestrial radio has become the homogenized, repetitious compost heap that it is today, read this blog post by Christopher Catchings.

In my opinion, he really nails it. I love his quote "Clear Channel has robbed you of diversity." Now the only places to find unique and emerging content is on those parts of the FM band where college and indie radio stations typically occupy.

Even Sirius XM, which I subscribe to, is repetitive on some of their content. But what I find repetitive and disinteresting, may be someone else's mainstream. And streaming, along with playlists of purchased music, constitutes most of what I play while in the car or in my home.

As for the increase in San Antonio area regional Mexican format stations, my opinion is that there is a viable market supported by the specific target demographic and most importantly, advertisers who know listeners will buy their products & services when advertised on these stations. Radio isn't about music, as Catchings says in his blog, it's about the money.

Exactly right.

One of my first communications classes in college was taught by an instructor who always asked the same question of new students on the first day of class... "What is the business of broadcasting?" He would get answers like "providing entertainment," "providing news" and "serving the public." And he would always tell the new students that these answers were completely wrong. "The business of broadcasting," he would say, "is selling audiences to advertisers."

Ask anyone who works in the radio or TV business who has the nicest offices and drives the fanciest cars at their work. It's not the on-air people or the programming people. It's the SALES people.
