Chicken fried steak is relatively common here, but San Antonio has several Chicken Fried Steak jewels.
Ranked in order of my preferance...

1. DeWeese's Tip Top Cafe 2708 Fredericksburg Rd -- Featured in Texas Monthly and also seen on several foody tv shows nationally, Tiptop has been serving some of the best comfort food in town since 1938. EVERYTHING here is good homestyle cooking. Their CFS is no exception. Tender cut, breaded to perfection and flavored perfectly. Enjoy with a side of prize winning onion rings. Try (!) to save room for desert. (Good luck) Their pies are to die for. NOT the place to go if you are on a diet, although they do serve salad with entrees. Typically open 11am to 7pm. Bring cash and a (un)healthy appetitie. Checks and credit cards not accepted.

2. Lulu's Cafe 918 N. Main 1 block north of IH 35. Featured on Man vs. Food, known for their colossal sized side servings, the CFS steak options vary from a 4 oz kids plate to a overwhelming platter. Lulu's is also known for their 3 1/2 lb cinnamon rolls, which served warm, is a real treat. Open 24/7

3. Goodtime Charlie's 2922 Broadway at Mulberry broad menu, but also known for their home-style cooking. Their CFS is typically smaller than the 2 above and side orders are proportioned properly. Onion rings very similar to Tip top's. Open daily 11am-12midnight

4. Bud Jones 1422 SW Military Dr @ Commercial Ave. Serving it up since 1958, Bud Jones is a southside treasure. Especially known for their all-you-can-eat fried fish and chips, on the rare occasion I wasn't compelled to order fish, their CFS is a worthy alternative. Although they claim to have the largest CFS in town, I think LuLu's has them beat. Open Sun-Thurs 7a-10p Fri-Stat 7a-12midnight

Hope this helps!

I agree with John's choices and would add Little Red Barn. My first critique of CFS is if I can cut it with a fork. If it passes that I go to taste.

The Longhorn Cafe has the largest chicken fried steak I've seen. I don't know if I would call it the best but is pretty good and certainly big.
