Pickwell Park (Highland Hills, SE side) (Mission, Goliad: apartment complex, crime, homes)

Does anyone know what is being built next to Pickwell Park?
lt's a gnormous construction site and looks like several buildings are going up there.
My mom thinks maybe TDHS will build there. (Their original building - behind the Valero, was built in the mid 80's.

Well, we can always use more newer apartments in this particular area. Could be influenced by Eagle Ford or Mission Trails(?) Hospital on Brooks Citi-Base...
There has been a lot of construction as far as homes go too....

Its entirely influenced by both the Eagle Ford and probably the hospital as well.

Correct, it is going to be an apartment complex. The neighborhood fought this but they built it anyway. Frankly I would have preferred the Hobo Jungle that it was before. Having paved just about every square inch of land on the north side of SA the city is now looking for any patch of green to turn grey. More rooftops means more tax money to pilfer for their pet projects. Never mind that we do not have the infastructure to handle the traffic, the schools are full and the water table is low. It took me 3 light changes to get through the light at SE Military and Goliad yesterday and that was a Sunday afternoon. On any given weekday at 5 pm that whole IH 37 / Military intersection is complete gridlock.

I don't understand this rant. The city zones the labd. Private investment buys and develops the land. The city has isn't looking for any patch of green, private developers are. If you have an issue with the growth in your area, I suggest you round up the funds to buy the undeveloped land and then sit on it but make sure to maintain it.

Sorry you don't understand. Perhaps you work for the city in growth management, are a developer or a politician. I guess it takes an ordinary citizen who does not stand to make any monetary gains from urban sprawl to see that unchecked development is not a good idea, especially high density developments in already congested areas. Yes, it is the cities job to zone the land. If this land was zoned for multi family, high density development (apartment complex) then someone was not doing their job of managing the cities development plans. This really comes as no surprise as you drive around the city, or attempt to, in most of the highly developed areas of town. Too much development in one area, not enough in another. Too much too fast in general. I'm sure there are a lot of people being paid a lot of money to manage our city. I just don't think there motives are in the best interest of the tax payers. To manage anything sometimes you have to say 'NO you can't do that, it will not work well'. Today it doesn't seem to matter what the consequences are, if someone is going to make a lot of money then that makes it all OK. That's no going to change. There is too much money to be made and, unfortunately, that trumps everything else.

I am none of those things you assumed. I have no vested interest in any development in SA. I just u.understand that this is free market capitalism and if you are so concerned with how the city grows or how it's being managed within that growth, maybe you could be more proactive instead of complaining online after the fact. Just my two cents.

We really don't need the extra traffic. The whole charm of the SE side was based on being the opposite of the NW side when it comes traffic.

Regardless of how nice they are promised to be in time they will end up like all apartment complexes increasing crime.

Anyone from this side of town can recall how nice some of the other apartments were in the 80s, like the Rivera, and what they are today.
