I'm looking for some good hiking and walking trails in SA and surrounding areas (within 20 min of SA). I typically go to Eisenhower Park, which is nice, but I would like to add more options to my routine. I typically go by myself, so I am looking for trails that aren't too remote and are reasonably well-used. Bonus points for trails that are at least 5 miles long - the SA park system's trails are nice but most of the ones I know aren't very long.

Thank you!

It's been discussed many times before, try the search function.

Leon Creek Greenway, Government Canyon, there are tons of places...

I did use the search function. I got threads on hiking groups, hitch hiking, churches/orthodontists/hiking, and things from 2098 that don't address my primary question regarding safety.

If there's someone who is a little more patient who could answer, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Leon Creek Greenway is around 14 miles, the McAllister-Rittiman segment of Salado is about 7, The JackWhite-Southside Lions is 7, Medina River trail close to 7. All those are one way distances. Maps in following link:

You might also check library for San Antonio on Foot (Capito & Willis) which is probably out of print, but has a lot of (mostly in town) self guided walking tours-great little book!

There is also Friedrich and Crown Ridge in the same general area of Leon Creek Greenway. The Mission Reach extension of the riverwalk is beautiful and peaceful.

Mission Reach - it's not very isolated, though I don't go by myself if it's dark. It's looong. Easy to get 5 miles or more.

I often do Salado Creek Greenway, starting around the Tobin Park trailhead and head north. It's reasonably well travelled, only rarely have I felt isolated there.

Both are good for walking/cycling, but aren't "hiking" trails.

government Canyon is lovely for hiking, easy to access, lots of trails. I've never gone alone, but it's reasonably well-visited so I can't imagine feeling unsafe there.

What's a good area of San Antonio to live where one can make best use of the longer trails. Also are they paved or hard packed gravel as some trails are such as in Austin.

The trails are paved. This link has maps: City of San Antonio | Official Web Site - Parks & Recreation Department You can look at the maps to see where the trailheads are and look at neighborhoods in that area. If you're wanting an apartment, there are apartments on Bandera that are next to a trailhead.

Our trails are along the creek beds, so if it ever rains again, the trails become temporarily unusable sometimes.

I enjoy walking the Salado Creek Greenway. My favorite segment is the one that cuts through Los Patios. I'm really surprised at all the deer I come across walking the other segments of the trail.
