Adults without Dependent Children

There is currently no federal requirement that states provide health coverage to adults without dependent children. These adults qualify for Medicaid coverage only if they have a disability or are age 65 or older. However, about half of states provide some coverage through federal waivers or state-funded programs for non-disabled adults who have limited incomes but do not otherwise qualify for Medicaid.

If you have been military all your life, I assume you are retired. Tricare will cover to age 26, your dependent son. Deductibles are higher past age 23, but he can be covered.

As I said above, Texas opted out of the Medicaid expansion. Ashbeeigh posted some info on who can be covered. I think pregnant women and women with young children might be covered in addition to the elderly and disabled in Texas. Other adults qualify for nothing except federal subsidies; but as I said above, very low income people don't qualify for subsidies since they were supposed to be covered by Medicaid. Because of the Supreme Court ruling, states don't have to expand Medicaid, but they will lose out on the additional federal dollars.

Since he's a veteran, is he registered at the VA? Most veterans can go there for health care, with minimal costs.
