That is just one persons opinion, lets not use it as the definitive reference for the good and bad in SA. What he may see as "dangerous" may not be dangerous to another or to a popular opinion. Not to mention the map is very ambiguous in detail.

If the OP could detail her exact "area" on a map, that could help a bit.

I live in the ghetto area known as the "westside", a lot of homeless, druggies, and stuff. BUt once you get used to it it doesnt bother you. Then again, i'm a male and "look" hispanic. So i dunno. Though like others say i'd just stay alert and drive the area getting to know ppl and stuff.. Maybe take another person with you and or make sure your cellphone works... Carrying mace is a good choice.. It's legal. If you carry a gun without a license chances are you'll go to jail despite trying to protect yourself.. Our law is screwy.

Thank you everyone for the responses. For my job I need to go to the police station of the area I am photographing and they made it clear that I could not walk around in that area and could be asking for trouble. I will just switch areas and let someone else have that area for the future who feel more comfortable there.

IMO - good call.

Also, I think that living somewhere is different than an outsider coming in and walking every single street. When you live in a "bad" area (or on the fringe), you become comfortable with it, know which blocks (houses) to stay away from, etc. You usually don't walk every street in the area, and lots of times go to and from your house and work or school, and stick mainly to that route (that you become extremely familiar with).

I live close to the rundown strip of Austin Highway (the one right by AH, with the rent by the hour motels, XXX movies in your room places), I've only walked towards those blocks once with my wife, and since it has cleaned up a bit, and as we got closer I got very nervous. Crack and Meth addicts are very unpredictable. I think you have to trust these types of instincts, to a point, but especially as a single female - very terrible, life changing things can happen, that are not worth the "I'm not going to go through my life scared" types of mantra.

Sorry for being so gloomy. Happy Friday everyone!

Okay so my new area is inside 410 at evers and babcock and below. I think this area is okay I hope. I'm really starting to feel like a chicken if I will need to switch again because I don't like this area either. Anyone know anything about down there? My area is inside 410, callaghan, babcock, and 24.

That area is Okay. I lived in that area for about a year and half and never had too many problems... There is one area to try to stay away from and that would be the areas by wildflower where the projects known as Regency Manor exist... But besides that the rest of the neighborhood is good. Never heard of anyone being randomly attacked. However the suburbs out there are rather pleasant and quiet.

thank you kenshin522 that makes me feel so much better. I can stand some areas that I need to be far more cautious in then normal. What I previously had the police really made the point to me that I was going to put myself in major harms way. They outlined 2 smalls areas that were okay out of a very large area I had.

Not sure what you mean by 24?
